TKC FACT CHECK: KANSAS CITY MILLENNIAL HYPE REVEALED AS BAD MARKETING!!!

File this one under SPRING BREAK FOREVER . . . Or not . . .

DESPITE LONG FORGOTTEN MSM HYPE: MILLENNIALS HAVE YET TO SAVE DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY AND THE URBAN CORE!!!

Quick passage to back up this point . . .

The basic takeaway from the most recent IRS data and Census Bureau estimates, which have been widely ignored in the established media. Essentially, Americans are rejecting “the blue model,” and relocating to cities, states and regions that are less dense, less heavily taxed, and less regulated ...

What we see locally . . .

- The Northland suburbs OUTPACE Downtown Kansas City in terms of growth.

- Empty-nesters and Third-agers are buying most of the pricey real estate around the Crossroads, not hipsters who don't have the cash for that kind of costly investment.

- Like it or not, in places like Baltimore and KC's urban core, rising crime is driving people away.

Moreover, there's a great deal of evidence that millennials are looking to move the suburbs.

And so . . . Hype from the New York Times about the so-called millennial revolution in Kansas City hasn't really happened in any real way beyond a marketing campaign or political talking points.

On the bright side, Generation-Z is the next up to for this same kind of corporate sales pitch.

  1. 25 million tourists can't be wrong!

  2. Will only agree that $1500 2 bedroom at One Light and two light means that not a lot of millennials will be moving in.

BUT the businesses that people are building will need to be staffed with younger people and have more opportunity for the new generation. That shouldn't be overlooked just because people with families continue to move to the suburbs. Nowadays more younger people aren't raising families right out of college and those are the far more vibrant people that KC is looking to attract.

  3. KCMO has been scammed by the latest trendy idea that millenials will all be moving to urban environments (which downtown KCMO isn't), taking public transportation instead of buying cars, enthusiastically participating in the "sharing economy" all their lives, and never maturing out of their 20-something selves.
And the whole bet is supported by hundreds of millions of dollars of subsidies, tax breaks, and debt.
Unfortunately people in their 20's have a tendency to become adults in their 30's, take on serious responsibilities, reorient their life priorities by getting married and having families, suddenly becoming much more interested in safe neighborhoods and good schools than the nearest coffee shop or latest artisinal cocktail, and move to communities that can offer those basic critical services.
And following generations almost never follow in the preceeding one's path. In fact, most often, quite the contrary.
    Trends change.
But debt and loss of public revenue lasts for decades.

Chuck, I knew that you would have something to say about that.

We can count on your unabated, racial hatred, like we can count on the sun rising.

  6. Debt doesn't need to last decades. Just file bankruptcy. Puerto Rico is trying to restructure its debt. Stockton, CA filed for bankruptcy a few years ago.

  9. @5:46am
Young people right out of college aren't raising families because almost half of them are still living with their parents, are broke, and are working at crappy jobs like the service/retail jobs being "created" at enormous taxpayer expense downtown.
"Vibrant" isn't the right word to describe that environment!
    Frosty!!

  11. If young people are smart, they won't be staying in KC, and they certainly won't be starting families here. This is a Dead Zone with no hope and no future. I'm hoping my grandkids don't stay around this rotten corpse of a city.

  16. You can't blame millennials for moving into or out of kc. You live where you can afford to live. If you want to find peace in your life, then live out in the country. If you want a constant social life then live in the city
    Niether is wrong
