Kansas City Journalist Salaries Fell 38% Over The Past Decade, While Rents Rose 3%

Here are some of the highlights:

- The number of journalists in the U.S. fell 22% over the past decade. In Kansas City, the number of journalists decreased 55% during the same period

- Since 2005, journalists' salaries fell 7% while rents rose 9%. In Kansas City, salaries grew 41% less than rents

- In 2015, there were ~230 reporters in the Kansas City metro, compared with ~510 ten years prior. Some smaller metros are left with as few as 40 journalists

  1. There is good news here: the salaries have INCREASED for consultants and government PR workers. They hire most of the same people and there is less of a requirement for the women to put out.

  3. The news game is tough, it used to be one of the top careers in KC but I think the new generation, the millennials and gen z are more apt to look at jobs that pay higher on specialized industries like banking, finance, medicine or even startups for the more adventurous.

    And yet, the J-Schools keep churning them out. But the actual purpose of J-Schools is not to train journalists for careers, it's to keep J-School professors out of the welfare line.
