Proposed Downtown Kansas City Convention Hotel District Expands Despite Petition

Local activists hope to put this to a vote but that isn't stopping one of the top law firms in Kansas City from their latest imaginary upgrade . . .

Take a look . . .

#170354: Notice received from Polsinelli to the City Clerk regarding a Petition to add real property to and adjust the maximum annual amount of Special Assessments for the Kansas City Convention Center Headquarters Hotel Community Improvement District.

There's an effort to figure out what all of this means given that most of it is written in nearly impenetrable legalese and . . . The bottom line is that there still hasn't been much interest from investors other than City Hall.

  1. An "investment" implies some kind of return. What return do I get from investing my tax dollars to this hotel? I'll probably never step foot in that hotel if/when it's built. Nor will my taxes decline by any kinds of profits/gains the hotel generates. That honor goes to people like Mike Burke and the rest of the development team. They should replace "investment" with "donation" because all these TIFs that have been handed out over the years amount to just that. A "donation" of tax dollars to help insure the financial stability of the developers.

  2. Amen, 8:21! In football, they call these kinds of "tweaks" moving the goal line. It appears they are trying to change the footprint of the heavy foot of law, to expand it--thus requiring more property owners to guarantee this crazy Mike Burke wet dream of a downtown hotel we don't really need.

And by changing the footprint, wouldn't that possibly negate the validity or legality of the opposition petition? Thus requiring THEM to now modify their petition? And within what time frame?

In which case, Polsinelli is playing WhackAMole with the opposition effort, clubbing them to death by changing the rules. Imagine that, Polsinelli the Development Kings, jumping into the game.

Strange bedfellows. Mike Burke needing their muscle, to save his project through sleight of hand.
