A slew of local high-profile biz departures, the recent low-rent sale and ongoing violent teen flash mob conflict continue to plague Kansas City's favorite entertainment district.
This week, the KC Biz Journal reminds us that the Internets and the evolving retail game also confront the consumer habits which made this location great . . .

The reality here is that the struggle to "save" the Plaza has already FAILED. Now locals are working on re-branding, restoring and renewing the legacy of this Kansas City consumer institution.

ReplyDeletePlaza is doomed because it's TOO CLOSE to the ghetto. We were there one Saturday afternoon and saw the sidewalks full of urban youths, young and not-so-young hipsters, and a few forlorn families that dribbled over from Johnson County. A friend of mine called the Plaza a mall with terrible air-conditioning - ha ha. It's on it's way to the dinosaur farm.

ReplyDeleteWent to the Granfalloon Friday night. Absolutely packed as was the Plaza. I parked in the garage next to Bank of America and Capital Grille. I know better than to do this but the Plaza was jammed. Anyway, noticeable security presence in the parking garage, which is good. Only went from my car to the Falloon and back and didn't see any problems. I agree with going all Rudy Giuliani down there, or even better, Bernard Goetz. We all know what the problem is. The Plaza is more important than the feelings of 17 year old future inmates and the "parents" who don't care what their kids are doing.

Same with Westport. All started going downhill when it became an entertainment district, catering to the lowest common denominator.

ReplyDeleteI went out to get some cheesecake today at the factory and as we walked along Nichols road we saw a black girl with shorts up her butt and half of it hanging out, a bum in front of the cheesecake factory that has been there for years, one down in front of Eddie Bauer, and trash on the sidewalk which I've never seen before. We also noticed a Nike store coming soon sign on the old Halls storefront. I've heard it's going to be a Nike Outlet but I'm not sure if that's correct or not. If it is that's going to be a killer for The Plaza.
We drove down in front of Crown Center and the roads are terrible, bricks missing, and holes, you can't see the lines in the road they are so faded and worn off.
What's sad about this is I remember The Plaza when it was all local Kansas City Merchants and kept clean. The Plaza and Crown Center are both huge tourist areas, and was also a place to meet with business clients. Now it has been cheapened with a Nike store, pop up stores, and empty storefronts. I can't believe the city doesn't have paint to paint the lines on the roads in these areas or replace a few bricks to at least make these areas look decent.
There was a time when K.C. was looking good and progress was on the positive side. Now it's going backward and down hill at the same time.
