KANSAS CITY FRIDAY REDUX: BECAUSE THEY MIGHT BE MAKING A COMEBACK, LOOK AT OLD SCHOOL TOLLS ON BROADWAY BUCK O'NEIL BRIDGE!!!

Locals find it hard to imagine tolls on the crumbling Broadway Bridge . . . But the fact is that the population boom in that direction didn't really start until the mid-80s and before that it was mostly just farmland and crooked, hayseed public officials on the outskirts of city limits . . . Now there's less farm land.

Anyhoo . . . Fair use for the purposes of public education and discussion, here's what the tolls looked like back in the day and why there's that huge empty space on the KC side of the bridge where alternative taxation DUI checkpoints are now staged.

You decide . . .

  1. I remember paying tolls to use that bridge along with the Paseo and 18th expressway.

  2. Let the bridge crumble. Streetcar to the bars at Westport is more important!

  3. Tolls for the bridge and let tourist ride the trolley for free. That is going to be a hard sell.

  4. At just 25 cents a pop, it's going to take decades to make any kind of dent in the cost of repair, much less replacement.
The city runs on the ongoing hope that the feds, state, or anybody will come in and pay for basic necessities, while the gang at 12th and Oak blow the money on toys and BIG BIG PROJECTS.
The chickens are heading home to roost.

  9. If people from the Kansas Side had to pay a toll every time they entered KCMO we might actually have a balanced budget.

    1. The same could be said for all the folks from Missouri who come to work in KS everyday without the dumb earnings tax.

  10. if it takes tolls, so be it! let's get going.

on the bridge and, most important, WIDENING I-70! with no trucks in left lane.

recently drive in another state with toll roads and they're worth it.

  11. If paying a toll will get the bridge fixed or replaced, then we must do it. Or we can watch the bridge deteriorate and be closed down. Our choice.

  12. Oh sure, free TooT LooT rides for those many millions of "visitors. But, deliveries, taxis, limos, and other local workadays get to pay toll.

Uh oh, the EPA and good 'greenies' won't approve of the damaging environmental impact from so very many extra stops and accelerations, especially when long lines get rush hours/wrecks/booth malfunction/etc. back-ups. Yep, the "ain'z got no coinz, no cardz wit me" drivers will really slow the flow.

    KindKC...tolls and taxes R US!
