TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! POLLING REVEALS APRIL 4TH GO BONDS CONFRONT KANSAS CITY VOTER DISTRUST AMID CITY HALL BROKEN PROMISES!!!

Supporters of the Kansas City $800,000,000 in general obligations bonds proposal work diligently to reassure voters that their money will be spent wisely whilst well-deserved skepticism and doubt challenge this dubious assertion.

To wit . . .

TKC EXCLUSIVE AND KICK-ASS DATA GLEANED FROM POLLSTERS AND OUR BLOG COMMUNITY REVEALS DEEP-SEATED SKEPTICISM OF CITY HALL ASSURANCES!!!

Here's the data point that has Kansas City consultants and politicos scared and increasingly lashing out at their critics.

2/3rds of active voters think City Hall will spend GO BOND money on projects other than infrastructure repair - Mainly, the airport, the new Downtown Convention Hotel and the streetcar.

To that end, last night the City Manager pleaded with a small crowd at the Midtown League of Women Voters regarding the impending tax . . .

“Not a dime of this money can be spent on the airport,” Troy Schulte said.

And while we're certain that the heart of the City Manager is pure and he's saying what he truly believes . . . History suggests otherwise.

Don't just trust the data so graciously shared with TKC, let's take a quick look at recent local history that powers current voter cynicism.

Not so long ago Mayor Sly James was FACT CHECKED about his contention that Kansas City can't borrow money from the airport.

"The city borrowed money from the airport in 2010. Then, during this mayor’s tenure, the city renegotiated the debt to extend the life of the loan to 2016."

Also, just last year Mayor Sly said that Kansas City need to "hit pause" on the airport but later restarted the effort to champion the very same single-terminal that voters objected to less than two months after his announcement.

And then . . .

The corrupt and widely disputed secret and gerrymandered vote for the streetcar and its latest extension offers a reason to doubt the good faith of local government . . .

A quote from someone much smarter than TKC on this topic . . .

Kansas City Public Library Honcho Crosby Kemper III says the streetcar vote was "one of the most corrupt elections in Kansas City since the Pedergast era."

Sadly, City Hall didn't learn anything from the negative perception of that vote because we're doing the same thing again very soon.

Finally . . .

The strongest advocates of the Downtown Convention Hotel claim that Kansas City enjoys 24 million tourists a year and needs this kind of EPIC capacity . . .

Thankfully, our community FACT CHECKED FAKE NEWS numbers from VisitKC which are higher than Denver and widely disbelieved by anyone even vaguely familiar with math.

In fairness, the answer to all of this bad faith from voters is an elementary rhetorical ploy . . .

"If the city passes all three GO Bond questions, the mayor and the city manager’s office will provide city residents with a report card at the end of each year that tells you exactly what projects were completed, how much they cost, where they were, and what projects are planned for the year ahead."

We checked this promise from the campaign site . . .

GOOD NEWS!!! GO BOND SUPPORTERS ALREADY EARNED AN A+ FOR THIS REPORT CARD EVEN BEFORE VOTERS APPROVED THE MONEY!!!

Still, TKC mockery and the legacy of City Hall duplicity simply starts this conversation . . .

We don't even want to get into the fact that Mayor Sly James touted the Fight For $15 minimum wage increase during his reelection campaign and throughout 2015 but then HE VOTED AGAINST THE MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE JUST YESTERDAY.

For those who might doubt the data and examples that we have humbly offered this morning . . . Here's a simple question to our blog community . . .

DESPITE THE DEARTH OF DEETS ABOUT INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIR IN THE BALLOT LANGUAGE: DO YOU TRUST CITY HALL TO SPEND $800,000,000 IN GO BONDS AS THEY'VE PROMISED???

We're waiting to be convinced that Kansas City is really excited about paying more property taxes and believes the talk from 12th and Oak after being burned so many times.

You decide . . .

  1. there's not a lot that people trust nowadays. They don't have much reason to. People don't really trust voting and that's why the low turnout will probably win this election.

    1. ^^^ That's exactly the problem. At the end of the day, one of the commenters earlier said that this vote will basically be decided by the stoners. The marijuana vote advocates will likely turn out in full force for this vote. If they want new taxes and vote yes down the line, then we're screwed.

    3. I LIKE THE MAYOR. He's doing a good job.

But I'm still not voting for more taxes.

  2. Bottom line is this. Companies like Cordish, H&R Block, Burns and Mac, etc have been given various TIFs, abatements, and cash from the city so heavily that they won't have to pay any property taxes. Or if they do, they will pay a very SMALL percentage of what they should be paying thanks to the incentive giveaways from City Hall. So if S'lie and his cronies want me to vote "yes", they have to simply answer one question for me: Why should I vote to increase my tax burden while the multi-billion dollar corporations I mentioned above get theirs lowered?

  8. It continues to amaze that in a city of 474,000 it seems impossible to find just THIRTEEN people who are actually sufficiently interested in serving the public that they will work to learn enough about municipal public policy and have enough concern about the city's residents and businesses that they'll focus on their actual responsibilities like public safety, infrastructure, common sense zoning, business regulation, and all the rest.
But instead there's an endless parade of D-list celebrity politico wannabes with no core values or priorities of their own and who get rolled by every insider and special interest around and equate their success with the heavily-subsidized results of their "eco devo" schemes.
It hasn't changed in decades and there's no one on the horizon with any different ideas or priorities of their own.
The GO bond election will be supported by the usual tiny percentage of KCMO voters and will pass and provide yet another $800 million over many years to feed the same sad, tired, and utterly unsuccessful system.
A sucking chest wound on the entire metro.

  13. After seeing my water bill go sky high for no apparent reason, I cannot vote for the tax increase to finance these bonds. How can 2 people in a house who only do laundry once a week generate a water bill of $85 a month in the winter? Something is very wrong here. I have polled my neighbors and they all say the same thing; they are voting no.

  15. If you don't think we need a new airport, you need to get out more and travel around the country. Our facilities are a total joke. No restrooms, real food options, etc. and if there are any delays, not even any place to sit. That's fine if this money won't be used for the airport but bemoaning the possibility of it being spent on something we are way behind in fixing is small-town local yocale thinking. And KCI is certainly NOT convenient. Have you tried parking up there lately, especially during the week at Terminal B? Probably not, the loudest opponents to progress probably haven't flown in a post 9/11 world.

  20. Spot on about this being a stoner-election. They will ultimately decide this. Seeing as a lot of them are Bernie Bros, this election will teeter on just how educated they are about TIF. If they have a good understanding about how we need this tax because the city diverts millions a year to corporations, then the bond is DOA.

Its a shame because the city does have an awful infrastructure but I simply cant vote to support Sly's policy of shifting the burden solely on to citizens and completely off corporations.

  21. So, in 10 minutes, I expect to hear Kraske on KCUR taking local media to task on the some machinations we know KC politics and media perform, like being discussed here and now on TKC. Kraske announced yesterday that this morning he'll discuss Prez Trump's statements about the media being the enemy of the people.

How much balance and discovery will there be, or will we get too much TRASHIN' TRUMP today in KC? MSM knows the style of tweeter Trump is soundbite slogans. He gets the dialogues started, agree or disagree with contents. I'm pretty sure Prez isn't SNIPER FIRE LYING with assertions of media dishonesties--because, Brian Williams and others PROVED IT!!!!

Fair and balanced STEVE, or you may go on the ENEMEDIA list, too.

  24. the hotel is part of the all-in bet to make downtown a thriving urban space.

maybe it's all a mirage but maybe, just maybe, it can work.

one would ha e to expect some amount of a huge bond authorization to be siphoned off for a few tens of millions of studies and advertising on the airport and somewhat less for the hotel.

    1. It'll never work. You can't simply manufacture demand. And it's been tried. The "if you build it they will come" strategy has already failed in this town a few times with marquee projects.

  25. @1;32 pm

When has build it and they will come ever worked? How is that NBA/NHL team coming along that they promised for Sprint Center? Yeah, technically they didn't promise it. But a LOT of the marketing for the Sprint Center vote was to get the NBA or NHL. Outside of a couple of yearly exhibitions, and the Penguins using us for leverage to get a new arena in Pittsburgh, we have never been close to getting either. We have a $276 million dollar building that is used mostly for concerts. We could have spent a fraction of that and built a smaller concert hall.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @2:26PM...no in fact Kay Waldo-Cronkite-Shaballo-Barnes and her BFF Steve Gloriso did promise a NBA or NHL team. They did! Then years later changed the story saying it was to keep the Big 12 basketball tournament here. Now the story is we don't need a team even though the Power and Light District is bleeding money. Why? Because the Sprint Center didn't get that NBA or NHL team Barnes and company promised.

Don't let Barnes and company and talking heads in the media get it twisted. They did promise a team and the Sprint Center and Power and Light NEED an anchor tenant.

  29. I don't care about polls. I listen to a man and his message. The first message I head from the current Mayor was in a church where he was discourteous to a woman speaker. The next message was at a rally for $15.00 per hour. The third was thru a bullhorn. The last two messages proved to be mispeaking or some other such alibi for lying. We are voting No No No. We will be working against the "new" airport.

  32. Don't bet on this vote failing. I thought for sure that people would vote against the E-Tax this last time, but they proved me wrong. I also thought that people would REMEMBER what happened to all the promises made about fixing what's broken in the city. Nope - total amnesia from the voters. They swallow the ads whole and don't question any of the statements made by City Hall. Ordinary homeowners are going to be paying for this little pile of poo for a VERY LONG TIME.

  33. So do we know who the Mayor and staff really represent?
