Kansas City Congressman Cleaver Talks Epi-Pen And Prescription Drug Pricing

Kansas City's leading elected official offers insight into his recent work and constituent complaints regarding medical industrial complex frustrations which cross party lines. Take a peek:

Congressman Cleaver: Demanding Transparency & Fair Pricing

This week, I joined twenty nine of my Congressional colleagues in sending a letter to President Obama, which you can read here, expressing our concerns about the dramatic increase in the cost of prescription medications.

I have received many calls from constituents in the 5th District of Missouri expressing their outrage of the rising costs of their prescription drugs. The most recent example of the pharmaceutical industries’ price-gouging is Mylan’s Epi-Pen. The company increased the price of the Epi-Pen, an injector pen for patients with severe allergies, by over 480 percent in a period of 5 years. This medication is critically important for patients who suffer the risk of dying if they do not have it with them. Mylan raised the wholesale price from less than $100 for a two-pack in 2007 to about $600, according to news reports.

It’s no secret this type of unfair pricing on a critical medication devastates working families, low-income individuals, and seniors. No one should have to skip medications or make the hard decision of whether to pay for a child’s lifesaving allergy medication or food for their family.

Make no mistake, we will not let this type of greed continue for companies looking to make a profit on the backs of those who are dependent upon their medications. We are asking the President to address this through executive action and demand transparent and fair pricing of medications for all Americans.

Warmly,

  1. If being fair on costs and payments is such a huge deal to Cleaver why don't he pay his own bills?

  2. This idiot has zero credibility. His opinion on any subject is USELESS.

  3. We need to get a handle on the cost of those trips to Africa and the price of a car wash too.

  4. His real beef is in the last paragraph: "companies looking to make a profit." Maybe Cleaver bought that car wash as a public service, but I suspect that he intended to make a profit too. It's only bad when other people do it.

If drug companies can't recover their R&D expenses there will not be any more R&D and therefore no new drugs. Cleaver and his cronies could make drugs less expensive by passing legislation that would make FDA review and approval quicker and cheaper.

Clearly, 8:10 didn't vote for him, but apparently a lot of people did.

    Have Republicans officially disavowed democracy?

  8. Cleaver's To-Do List:

    1. Find an issue with absolutely no resistance so I don't have ti really stick my neck out or have a backbone... check.

    2. Sit on the sidelines and wait while someone else does the heavy lifting, I have quarters to count after all... check.

    3. Take credit on the back end by sending out a letter that only the 30-40% of my voting base that is literate can read... check.

    4. Wash, Rinse, Repeat. I've been pulling this scam for YEARS, and the fools that vote for me haven't caught on yet... check.

  9. Way to be at the leading edge of news topics, Congressman Carwash!

The Epipen story was weeks ago, and the Mylan CEO was already grilled by a Congressional committee weeks ago. Because the CEO is the daughter of U.S. Democratic Senator Manchin, most fellow Democrats kept their mouth shut about her outrageous rip-off of consumers and Medicare/Medicaid.

Congressman Carwash, a dollar short and a day late, as usual.

  10. Tonight's CH.9 short interview of Carwash was all but indecipherable. Between stuttering and "uh" pauses, he may have said something about road conditions of I70 or some such. If if if if if...okie done.
