Council Dude On InterContinental Ask: Everything In Kansas City Is Blighted???

An important passage from more local coverage of a Kansas City tax fight in the making:

City councilman Quinton Lucas says community improvement districts are a growing trend throughout the metro and can be a painless way to apply a tax. He says they plan to have a conversation Wednesday about the definition of blight and if the Plaza is the place they want to use it.

"If we make a blight designation here, just think what in Kansas City is not blighted," Lucas said. "So that is the thing. I think we need to think about. Do we want to actually allow the rule to expand to cover everything in Kansas City and everything in Missouri? And that could be the trouble here."

  2. Just so I understand this... The owners woukd prefer to mask a price increase as a tax and give the city the usual administrative rake in order do renovations? Why?

  9. So nice to see that Councilman Lucas reads the TKC comment section!!!!

After being quoted as in support of the designation, perhaps now Mr. Lucas is coming to his senses.

Previously appearing in TKC comments, a reader wrote:

"The Intercontinental is asking for KCMO municipal government to use their taxing authority (threat) to allow a private business to have an unfair advantage in the marketplace. That is plain wrong.

If the Intercontinental Hotel on the Country Club Plaza is granted "blight" designation, then the KC Council is tacitly admitting that the entire city is blighted."

  10. KC is very cavalier in when they decide to use their tax authority. Its why we constantly find ourselves behind the 8-ball on basic shit like trash, water, sewer, roads, etc. There is only so high a tax burden can rise. If you have some neighborhoods with ~11% sales tax and with the streetcar, higher property tax...what mechanism are you going to be able to call on to do just the basic shit?

The mayor & council has to get their head out of their asses, quick.
