TKC SUNDAY QUESTION: HAS KANSAS CITY SOLVED THE HOMICIDE PROBLEM???

One of the most historically deadly months of the year is about to come up as Mayor Sly along with mainstream media tout the lower homicide rate.

Check it:

KC homicide rate down in first half of 2014

Deets:

"But in a city resigned to year after year after year of 100-plus homicides, those 34 killings in the first six months of 2014 put Kansas City on pace for its lowest annual homicide total since 1967.

"As of June 30, killings were down 31 percent from the same time last year."

What this exhaustive bit of hype doesn't mention . . .

- Plans proposed to change the way Kansas City gathers homicide data

Remember that KCPD not too long ago faced a DOJ wrist slap for data reporting.

- Bad weather

Just thinking out of the box here . . . Kansas City has also faced historically low temperatures . . . This stat is worth noting if even macro-economic analysts attribute some economic slowdown to Global Climate Change this anomaly. At the risk of going all Malcolm Gladwell, instead of touting this homicide solution tipping point . . . Maybe a look at a few alternative factors might be worthwhile.

- Shootings on the rise

There have been no shortage of shootings this year and that number has remained relatively constant. This goes back to our first point but also gives some credit in homicide reduction to bad aim AND medical science.

Right now, we're just throwing out other things to considers . . . This most important discussion is happening in local neighborhoods.

Accordingly . . .

HAS KANSAS CITY SOLVED THE HOMICIDE PROBLEM??? OR HAS EARLY YEAR HYPE SIMPLY ARRIVED LATE THIS YEAR?!?!

While we hope the problems is solved and this represents real progress, many aren't convinced.

Developing . . .

  1. Be a little hopeful here, this is a perfect Sunday opportunity to encourage KC to put down their guns against each other. Progress can be built upon.

  7. Agree with the first comment, progress against homicide numbers can happen for all kinds of reasons.

    Take a look at this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_windows_theory

What's important is that we build on the trend and not lose this opportunity to make real change.

What does it say about a race that when the temperature heats up the expected result is for them to be more impulsively violent?

Do they live in "central air" deserts?

Maybe the local Methodists can erect plastic domes and bring in cooling fans like they use in early season football games?

  20. TKC... Keep calm. It's election season. We've already caught Sly in several unethical endeavors, including blatant lying. He's got rein over foolish Darryl Forte. Together, they will do just about anything to push a skewed perception of resolve. Wait til election season is over, then all of the sudden. Truth bomb.

    You heard it here first.

  21. What can be more fun than shooting plastic ducks with a water gun at the county fair?

Apparently shooting passing motorcyclists with a real gun is much more entertaining.

    And deadly.

Jake Rameau, 26, was found dead after his motorcycle crashed in Muskegon Heights, Michigan.

Authorities originally assumed the crash was a single-vehicle accident, but when a bullet was found in the victim's body it became a murder case.

An investigation led to the arrest of a black male, 30-year-old Robert Earl Gee who has been charged with open murder.

The murder occurred on June 26, 2014.

A similar shooting occurred three days later when 36-year-old Rebekah Sue Bletsch was shot while jogging in nearby Dalton Township, Michigan. Police assumed Bletch was a hit-and-run victim until, like Rameau, a bullet wound was found in her body. The victim had valuables on her person at the time of discovery ruling out robbery as a motive. That leaves 'human duck shooting' as the likely motive.

The victim leaves behind a beloved husband and 11-year-old daughter.

Because the shooter has not been apprehended, it is too early to validate Bletsch's death as a black-on-white murder. DailyKenn.com is presuming the murder to be an unverified race crime.

It is literally open season on white people in Michigan.

Dear Mr. Tony: Thanks for posting this question. You are right about historically high homicide rates in August--KCMO's single highest monthly total for homicides was 21 in August 2008. Nationally, there is not yet a clear pattern on homicides--Wash/DC and Chicago are up considerably over 2013--while NYC and Los Angeles are down from their 2013 totals. My personal guess is that while we have not solved the city's homicide problem, we have made progress largely due to Chief Forte: He has "squared the circle" by giving minority communities a sense that the cops are there to protect them not victimize them--while simultaneously giving the cops on the beat the reassurance that he will protect them against unfair charges of racism. This is the "balancing act" that every big city police chief has to engage in--and Forte has done a good job so far. Take care and God bless. In Christ, Ernest Evans

  33. 9:49 nails it. There are just as many (if not more) shootings than usual; they just aren't aiming well. My guess is this is the negro answer to the vigils and other wailing wall activities that ask them to quit killing each other. They've decided it's ok to shoot, just not kill as much. Of course, this is hell for the taxpayers who pick up the target's hospital bills.
