CELEBRATE THE TRAGIC KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN GROUNDBREAKING AFTERMATH!!!

Digging in the dirt, blocking traffic and digging up the street earned a few fans this morning . . .

Still. . .

CONSTRUCTION ON THE KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR IS NOW UNDERWAY!!!

Fun facts . . .

- They found a bit of old streetcar line while digging today ... Which reveals the ancient nature of the transit in question.

- Some guy was shot in the head and killed along the current toy train streetcar route earlier this month.

- And, of course, they're pushing money to PHASE DEUX of this thing before a single vote is cast.

Still, groundbreakings are mostly fun occasions and Kansas City remains on track to bankruptcy and a screwed up bond rating.

Developing . . .

If the line is even remotely successful OR if the phase 2 ballot item passes, then everyone that writes for this site needs to share in a letter of congratulations to every individual or entity listed by name in a blog post on this site related to the project.

Because if you're unwilling to eat crow then you should stop writing about the subject.

  4. "The results are in. Streetcars are catalyst investments that produce real and significant neighborhood revitalization and redevelopment here in Kansas City and elsewhere," Johnson said. "If you do not believe it, your eyes are closed and your ears are shut. The sun rises in the east, the world is round, men walked on the moon and streetcars deliver economic development."

Me thinks Mensa Boy is little wacko to be quite honest. Is there something in the air, water, and soil in Nebraska that causes hallucinations and long term psychotic episodes?

  5. If Matt Staub is so freakin enamored with this thing, let HIM sell the old fossil of a rail piece. "Meaningful homes"??? It was left in the ground for a reason. Because it was and is a transportation system of the PAST!!! The PAST Matt, like over SIXTY years ago.

You are correct, but lets be sure the numbers, stats and efficacy reports are not the same type of numbers, stats and efficacy reports that started this bullshit idea to begin with.

Does it, or does it NOT create revenue for the city and it's citizens. The P&L still loses cash every year even though many say it will be a huge source of city income at some point in the future. That may be true, and, it may be worth the investment on a yearly basis for that blue sky hope and dream. That in no way, means that it is a success right now, cause it is not.

The Toy Train is a loser.

  7. Your Friendly Streetcar Neighbors have all the answers.

Kevin Carlye - I am humored about their complaint for gerymandered districts. The districts are the way they are because of eastside demands as I recall. There was an interest in not having minorities all in one district and losing city power. (which I completely understand)
Dave Johnson - AKA crazed monkeys throwing their feces at zoo patrons.

  13. The incredibly disgusting thing about this scenario is how the city can manage what will be nearly 3 billion bucks for this train thing and still have brush creek a broken school system, shitty roads a broken down antiquated police department, piss poor city service, and not one serious convention on tap. This is exactly how neighbourhoods become ghettos.

  16. Sly trotted out Staubio's business partner, the pro quid pro team to utter a few little white lies also.

Patience Jones, who moved to downtown from New York City about four years ago, said the streetcars will attract young people who want a dynamic city.

People ask why she and her husband moved here from New York, but that is the wrong response. “The right reaction is of course you did because Kansas City is awesome,” she said. “I plan to ride the streetcar several times a day.”

  20. Tragic might be a bit overwrought, but stupid certainly applies. Besides, the days of the urban migration might be numbered. Here's an article from today's Wall Street Journal about suburbia making a comeback:

    http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303749904579576440578771478?mg=reno64-wsj&url=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Farticle%2FSB10001424052702303749904579576440578771478.html#mod=todays_us_front_section

This on the same day Kansas City breaks ground for its very own toy train. Irony is a bitch.

    2. Clearly here a guy with a finger on the pulse of American culture and demographic change...

Tell us about what "everybody" wants, will ya?

Is it a nice culdesac and a beige house that's 45% garage?

Is it a 30 minute commute each way to go to a school/job/pharmacy/grocery store that's 1.5 miles away down feeder roads and through massive empty parking lots?

Do tell, dick Clark...what do the people want?

  24. $10-15 million bond payments for decades in support of a fad that will last 3-5 years max.
And by then, Richard Florida and the urban futurist industrial complex will have invented a whole new menu of "must have" ideas so that they can sell more books and shore up their lecture fees.
And the empty-headed elected lemmings of KCMO will rush to the chase.
Tragic...and funny for anyone who lives in the metro and can only watch in amazement as amateur night on the plains continues year after year.

  25. Sly and his dumb ass crew have succeeded at one thing only. Hopelessly fucking up any chance KC had to create a truly remarkable, cost effective, efficient, affordable, and commuter oriented city wide transit system.

  27. In the South and West, cities of all sizes saw the most consistent rise in population, with most growing at least 1%. By contrast, few cities in the Northeast or Midwest grew that much.

Streetcar extensions at this point will do nothing but put this city deeper in the hole.

  28. The roar of the crowd was so great that nobody heard the gigantic flushing sound as future taxpayers' dollars were sucked down the toilet for a streetcar system that travels twenty blocks and costs $102 million dollars ...

  29. But, 4:56, the important part is that these urbanite wannabes THINK they're part of something big and special. Ding, ding ...here comes the trolley. Wow! This is almost as exciting as the subway in NYC. I bet a lot of TV shows and movies will want to film here now that KC has been properly "urbanized."

  30. "Yea I know, all those other 60 cities with rail transit are horrible and dying. And the hundreds of cities around the world are on the edge of disaster. I hate change"

The other 60 cities with rail transit may or may not be horrible and dying. Either way, rail transit is not a factor, 2:23. When is the last time anyone heard someone say, "Oh, golly gee. I'm going to move to San Francisco (or Portland or Tampa or wherever) BECAUSE THEY HAVE RAIL TRANSIT THERE?" It doesn't even register, Mensa boy.

  35. It should be humbling to Tony and the snivelers on this blog that they are getting their collective butt kicked by those that TKC and his posse proclaim are incompetent city hall bureauocrats or electeds.

Worse yet, they just don;t seem to care.

I'm an outsider from OP, but 30 minutes on this blog tells me that there are way to many here who take themselves way to seriously.

    A polar bear? LMFAO

    ReplyDelete
  36. The only people who are getting their butts kicked are the majority of residents and taxpayers in KCMO who are regularly hoodwinked by clever attorneys and small voting minorities into having tens of millions of dollars that could be spent for actual municipal services that affect them on grandiose schemes that are sold to clueless councilmembers and mayors.
It's amazing that a commentator like 12:24 wants an apology from people asking ligitimate questions if the project "is even remotely successful", whatever that means.
In 3-5 years there'll be a whole new menu of great ideas that the academics and think tanks will have come up with and are roaming the country selling to elected officials so their cities "won't be left behind".
The streetcar will be on blocks in the shed and the millenilas will have aged out and living in safe suburban neighborhoods with yards for the kids and good schools.
And the urban futurists and clever attorneys will be laughing all the way to the bank.

  38. I want to keep labor union members working, but Jermaine Reed's position on this is probably one that many council members hold. I'm afraid that our representatives are more focused on their careers and not so much on the financial well being of this city.

Jim Glover is loved by the unions, and even though he's not on the Transportation Committee, he's got his hands on this thing as much as Russ Johnson does.

For all of the people who believe this is some new, great, electric transit option that promotes green energy, you have to realize that the real powers motivating this is $$$, and a bunch of people who don't care about you, and who you probably hold very little in common with, are going to get stinking rich off of putting together a sales pitch that appeals to gullible hipsters who think their mission in life is to save the environment.

Glover and Johnson will be rewarded.
