There isn't anybody in Kansas City who believes columnist Yael Abouhalkah is writing about the murder rate for anything but political gain.

Lack of City Council leadership on murders takes its toll
Not only is the criticism unfair, it's also inaccurate.
For instance . . . Council Dude Scott Wagner has put forward one public safety measure after the next. I don't agree with a lot of them but there's no denying that he has put in a lot of work.
Council dude John Sharp is probably more connected to local anti-violence community efforts than any other elected official @ City Council.
And Council Lady Melba Curls has a lot of critics but she has done admirable work in supporting organizations that attempt to stop violence before it starts and provide alternatives for struggling families.

Insiders have told us . . . The Star is now so weak and in short supply of manpower that they have virtually no interest in council races . . . Their last gambit for access ahead of other media outlets is to play to support from a Mayor whose popularity is waning.
Moreover . . .
There's more than enough blame to go around when it comes Kansas City's horrific homicide count but it's a joke to see The Star go after the City Council without a mention of the Mayor's culpability after so many of his big promises have failed to materialize.
Developing . . .
The city council certainly should share some of the blame because they put more emphasis on traffic ticket revenue than in fighting crime. But one also must see how ineffective the KCPD has been for many years. You can blame lack of resources, leadership, state control etc but you cannot get away from the fact that the KCPD has not got the job done and it only continues to get worse.

Actually, Yael's comments and observations were about the public safety committee specifically and Sharp's comments today show clearly that he somehow thinks that ignoring issues and counting on nonprofits is the way his committee operates.
ReplyDeleteCurls and Wagner aren't even on this committee and passing ordinances addressing scrap metal seem rather beside the point when the city had one-third the number of murders as New York in 2013. And, if the editorial is accurate, not having the chief of police before the committee a single time that year seems irresponsible at best.
And who IS on the committee? Brooks and Taylor, neither of who have had anything to say about crime or murders. And Reed, whose contribution has been limited to criticizing the police for their efforts in the Plaza.
AWOL would be a generous way to describe this group's efforts.
And Sly and the police board are no better.

ReplyDeleteIn January 2009, the Star published their Murder Factory articles which identified 64130 as the area where most of the murders took place. As a result, the rest of Kansas City adopted a NIMBY mind set toward violent crime. As long as the murders are happening OVER THERE, and to PEOPLE THAT DON'T LOOK LIKE ME, I don't really care. It's not MY problem- it's THEIRS.
So as long as you're looking for ways to exonerate the Mayor and lay blame, Yael, look at your own fucking self assuole.
