It's Not Easy Joining The 1% In Kansas City

Quick note regarding economic opportunity in Kansas City . . .

Here's a snippet from a new local activist blog that's an offshoot of the Occupy Movement . . .

Kansas City ranks 60th in U.S. economic mobility study

Deets:

"In Kansas City 5.6% of people were able to go from the bottom 20% to the top 20% making KC the 60th most economically mobile metropolitan area out of the 100 researched."

STL ranks even worse - 84th.

Translation: Despite so much talk of entrepreneurship and a cowtown Internets revolution . . . It's still kinda hard to get ahead in Kansas City.

More in a bit . . .

First of all... let's get one thing straight. Kansas City is lame.

Second, power in Kansas City is based solely on a circle of friends. There are no new friends. The friendships are generational and/or a result of nepotism. The people in power either all went to college together, had sex with the same folks, cheated on the same folks or did drugs in the same circles. So, power is no more than a drug dealers delight. It has nothing to do with education, accomplishment or ingenious discovery. Sure, there are a few but the majority of these people share a sexual partner.

Absolutely, nobody from the underground will come above ground until the old guard dies off.

When has-been groups like Freedom,Inc still exist and still maintain status in a community where they've done absolutely nothing for the people since at least 1960, then its clear that a person can live a lifetime on past wins instead of present wins.

This town is such an ass backwards social experiment.

  12. 918,925,930,936 are all correct. Been there done that. I have grown tired of some of the wierd old (powerful) people in this town. I also hate that people pre-judge me as a republican. I have never encountered that in my life before till I moved back here. People think that just because I try to make money that I am a republican. Just because I speak and act conservatively that I am all the way over on the scale. My politics are not open to be discussed. All these old school jackhats at the Nelson Art Museum don't know boo about new money. They are still sucking on the teets of their grandparents. They are all kind of pathetic because they are so sheltered and not worldly. They come off as dumb and snotty. They are big on pre-judging people without knowing them. I suppose the good thing, is in the end, the heirs of these moron jackhats will be working for my kids, so it all works out in the end. Also, try being jewish in waspy circles. People always think that just because you don't look jewish you can't be jewish. I swear, I met someone that told me that black people can't be jewish. She told me that black people can't have freckles or straight hair. I was scared because of the crazy stuff coming out of their mouth. She also couldn't believe I'm from KCK, and that my husband and kids are all college educated with east coast degrees (masters and higher, thanks). She was unhappy that I had sold her a house in Leawood that I fixed up once she found out I was jewish, have adopted black kids, and live in KCK. She acted like my house was going to infect her with my jewishness and black childrenish. I was pretty scared of this old guard. These people are out of touch. My kids encounter this often when they are showing homes over in JO, they show the house to a nice white KU graduated person and then they say, "You know a lot about this house, are you the groundskeeper or something" and they are stunned. See the JO is full of rednecks in disguise in liberal clothing. When confronted with this fact they often deny it. Just move on, take their money, sell them the kool-aid with laminated flooring and move on.
