Kansas City loves to talk about economic development and incentives but very little of the discussion is focused on improving business in the urban core. Thankfully, that's about to change.

TAKE A LOOK AT AN IMPORTANT DISCUSSION REGARDING MINORITY BUSINESS IN KANSAS CITY AND THE UPCOMING "BUY BLACK" EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVE!!!

Now, of course, there will be some petty bickering about the nomenclature of this initiative. But overall, this is a good idea for a lot of reasons but mostly because of something written in black and white on the meeting notice: "Black businesses are the number one employer of Black People in America."
Furthermore . . .
Helping to create jobs in the urban core is more effective than any anti-violence, anti-blight or even more education programs . . .

How knows, maybe a Latino is a better fit, if we are going just by race,

ReplyDeleteI remember when businesses were "Whites Only." Blacks had their own stores, own hospitals, own buses, own schools. They fought, rightly so, for equality. For the right to NOT have to "buy black." For all people.

I admit I didn't click on the link...but how am I supposed to know which businesses are owned by a black person? Is there a list? I'm happy to support small businesses and I do a large chunk of my shopping at small local businesses in Waldo and Brookside, but I don't know the owners or anything. Are all the black-owned businesses on the East side? Because I don't go over there. Or south of 75th, for that matter.
