This week amid Kansas City stoplight controversy and overall scorn against City Hall, Mayor Sly was keeping a lower profile . . . A hip-hop win from his son KJ demonstrates that Kansas City's Mayor Sly James isn't the only talent in the family that has had a just bit of trouble adjusting to public life and media scrutiny.
This Kyle James track from the Barz4Daze mixtape is certainly the most controversial and and debated tune here on TKC and across Kansas City's music scene. References to misogyny, alcohol abuse and a hardcore hip-hop lifestyle have evoked criticism from locals who don't think the party track is the right look for the progeny of a prominent Kansas City's family now leading this town.
Clearly, this tribute to club night and the hip-hop lifestyle doesn't have a lot in common with Kansas City's political effort to encourage community participation and engagement in our struggling Democracy.
Still, without question the "Bender" video is a win for KJ & Team COA after a great deal of struggle to find a place in Kansas City's music scene and hopefully beyond.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it's really promotion. TKC is connecting KJ's career with Mayor James. That's something that no other media is KC will do or they'll get smacked down the Sly and his supporters.
ReplyDeleteThe song is way better than the video. The video production for this is quite lackluster. This is no sensation to me.... my 4-year old niece just put together an equally complicated chorus last week, when I visited her in Texas, called "Jess or Jessica" She just repeated it over and over again.

ReplyDeleteTony, this is not a comment from an unqualified hater. I have produced music for commercials and Top 40 artists for more than 20 years. Some of your commenters have some insight here and I just want to say they're on the right track.
ReplyDeleteThis is an amateur effort at best. The song composition is childish and I've seen better technically produced video productions from high school teams. There is no coherent style or aesthetic and the cutting looks like it was done by two people with very differnt ideas.
I have no ill will toward Sly or his son. But on this and concerning our city. They need to work harder on techical details and not just the force of their personality.

ReplyDeleteAll of those involved are just getting started and at least they are trying to follow their dreams while the rest of you watch and talk shit. Say what you will at least they tried and did a damn good job. You may think a video has to be done a certain way or a song has to sound a certain way, but it does not. The value in art is it can be whatever you want it to be and that is not based on any ones opinion but the artist's.
