LOCAL LESSON IN SCARCITY: LIKE IT OR NOT, KANSAS CITY SCHOLARS ARE HUNGRY FOR FOOD AS WELL AS KNOWLEDGE!!!
A KSHB story/community journalism effort to feed school kids continues today
Tragic Fact: About 125,000 kids in the Kansas City area go to bed hungry
Tragic Fact: About 125,000 kids in the Kansas City area go to bed hungry
Sorry but use got to call bullshit on this one. Metro KC is currently 2.035 million people. If we say that 25% of the population is school age (a generous estimate), then we are saying that 24.6% of that quartile is going to bed hungry. If this is the case, they must mean hungry for knowledge.

ReplyDeleteBuy food.
You are welcome.
sheeeeet!!! nigga don;t need food...i needs weed, drank, an popeye's in dat orda!
ReplyDeleteI don't see that many really skinny, undernourished kids around the city.
ReplyDeleteThey're getting fed. Wonder how many middle/upper grade kids go to school just for the free lunches and to be with their friends?
Innercity schools need to change focus from basic education (other than reading, basic math and citizenship/light history) to MOTIVATION and career discovery and skill education.
Innercity schools need to prepare kids for careers, even if not upscale careers. Yes, offer college prep for those who test for it in middle school, but for those who don't test well, offer much more voc-tech, retail, and other paths requiring skills but not college level thinking.
I think public schools need to throw out the 50-year-old playbook and analyze their customers and their needs.
MOre computer skills in Windows and Word for the ones who will likely go into data-entry clerical, concentrating on speed and accuracy, and for boys good with their hands, more diagnostic training and machine skills.
Schools should focus on CAREERS/JOB skills more than pre-college prep.... as a separate track.
We all know by looking at a middle school kid in our families, which ones want to earn a living with their BRAIN, or their BACK. And design a curriculum to prepare them for whichever!
I thought this was about kids not eating, not your plan to fix the inner city schools. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'll agree to disagree that the current way of doing things is incorrect. What you're proposing sounds alot like what Europe in general does. Strangely enough, most European countries are ahead of us in testing in most subjects, so I say you run for the school board and make this happen. As far as the kids going to bed hungry, I can't even go there this early in the morning. It will raise my blood pressure. Where is all my tax funded programs money going, if it's not going into the bellies of the kids it's supposed to help? Ah, that's right, the money went to get the new wheels on the Dodge Charger. Sickening. My heart goes out to these kids. It's not thier fault, but I do doubt your numbers Tony. Perhaps they should eat thier lima beans instead of going to bed hungry?
ReplyDeleteQuit having fucking kids people. Typical of Kansas City have a shitload of bastard kids and then whine because there aint no handouts ...while daddy is nowhere to be found. A damn shame it isn't against the law.
