I don't know if we can call this good news BUT Kansas City Public Schools seem confident that they aren't just a few weeks from being broken up.
Take a look:
KMBC: "The Kansas City Missouri School District says it's on its way to regaining accreditation and doesn't think a state takeover is necessary."
Fox4: "KCMOSD Superintendent Predicts No State Takeover"
There is some precedent for this given that the Missouri General Assembly spent months talking about jobs bill but eventually did NOTHING . . . As for the alleged improvement in the KCPS? Kansas City has head the same thing for more than 25 years already.
Maybe just 20 or so more meetings to talk about how THIS time they're really going to do better and have the folks from the state without the guts to do what they know has to happen to give th ekids a chance.
ReplyDeleteThe SIZE of the district or its structure or its inability to focus on actual teaching, or any of the other excuses being put forward in these meetings have not been the problem with the KCPS.
For decades it's been run by incompetents who hired their family and friends, paid millions of dollars to contractors who didn't have to do much of anything, and wasted money on cozy insider deals. The young people came dead LAST.
And the latest scandal with the HMM contract shows that that hasn't changed to the tune of $34 million.
This is the best chance in a lifetime to actually do something for the children and families of the district. Please don't tell me cowardice will let it slip away.
Vouchers NOW!
ReplyDeleteIf we want KCMO in Jackson County to survive economically ... VOUCHERS NOW!
Otherwise, still MORE families with enough means that they CAN move WILL move. And it's the households with means who have kept the City's economy afloat. If we DON'T have vouchers to give these people a CHOICE (we liberals are FOR choice, remember?) then "good by" to all that disposable income that ultimately drives the City's revenue stream!
VOUCHER NOW ... FOR THE CITY'S SAKE.

ReplyDeleteIt is going to be folks like "THE TRUTH"(comment at 8:18am) who will keep KCPS alive. They fail to see that their agenda distracts people and the legislature from dealing with the issue, KCPS. It doesn't matter whether they are right or wrong. Now is not the time to bring up vouchers, teacher tenure, teacher evaluations, unions, etc.
Green is right to feel optimistic. If everybody agreed about all of those other issues, they would already be in place. The distractions will prevent the legislature from passing anything that will be both veto proof and lawsuit proof. Once you put it in the hands of the lawyers, it will take too long to resolve. Odds are there will be a legislative change in November and you will be back at square one again. Consider how long the Turner case is taking in St. Louis.
The KCPS situation is already complicated. Disolving a district is not an easy task legislatively. Add those other agendas to the mix and it will be very difficult for everyone to keep all of their ducks in a row.
"It will take a long time to resolve"?
ReplyDeleteThe district has been a complete disaster for DECADES!
What a joke!
@4:31
ReplyDeleteYou've got it. Decades of this and they are finally in a position to pull the trigger and put KCPS out of its misery. What do these idiots start doing? They start arguing about the number of times they are going to shoot KCPS in the head. One shot is good enough(disband KCPS). They need to stop all of this voucher, teacher tenure, teacher evaluation, and union crap. They need to just pull the trigger before the lawyers get a hold of an issue which is actually in debate. All of those other issues are not acceptable to every district in Missouri or they already would have been in place. I would say keep it simple, but it is already too complicated. These other folks and their agendas, right or wrong, don't seem to understand that now is not the time.
When is the time? After KCPS is no more.
