I'm an R.N. . It's part of the job. Don't like it? Then find something else to do. We don't take care of people when they are at their best. In 8 years of working in a mental health unit, I've been through it all. I've been called "mother-fucker" so often, I'm thinking of legally changing my name to it. I've also been assaulted multiple times. Goes with the territory folks.

I'm was an ED physician in the metro area. 33 years in the field. I have been assulted too many times to count. One of the reasons I retired. I have seen many R.N's assulted over the years.

If the patient is well enought to swing and wrestle, they should go directly to jail. You bet you get heat from the hospital if you file charges.
Assault against any Emergency Room personnel is a felony in Missouri.

ReplyDelete1147, I'm work for a police department that primarily operates in Jackson County, and trust me, although that may be the law or a small element of it, Jackson County Prosecutors will not file on it. Trust me.
ReplyDeleteNBC 41 needs to look into the Federal audit at TMC (Hospital Hill) that doesn't allow their security to handcuff people or use force against someone who is assaulting other patients or staff.

ReplyDeleteThe Clay Coutny Prosecutor's Office is VERY efficient in charging assailants of Emergency Room workers at my facility.
Assaulting an Emergency Room worker is yhe same level offense as assaulting a police officer.

I use my own Taser on unruly assholes that I'm trying to help. Sometimes I poke them in the eyes or slap their throat. I will not be assaulted...if you don't like it then find your own way to the hospital...but you better be NICE to us if we're trying to help you!

This has been going on for years. The police reports aren't filed because the patients are mentally incompetent and it would not even go to trial. The families would use the excuse of mental anguish and get a finger wagging and told not to do it again. (i say ironically)Besides the nurses are Professionals and should expect things of this nature, the Emergency Nurses Association should have self-defense as a required course. If they are an illegal it is even harder to prosecute because they don't show up. How many KCPD officers will take somebody from the hospital to jail and not return them to the hospital when they request to go again? TMC security has been neutered to give it a suburban look.

As a nurse manager, I encourage my staff to first remove themselves from the danger, get hospital security involved immediately, and file a police report if the nurse feels the need.
The police department in North Kansas City does not hesitate to arrest patients that are accused of assault by staff, and the security department is very good about providing any video tape evidence that is captured.
Just be glad you work at NKC. TMC Hospital Hill security can no longer use force or put their hands on patients. They cannot intervene if a patient is assaulting another or staff. They cannot handcuff. They can only call KCPD to report a disturbance and depending on the call volume downtown and/or in the area, will depend on the response.
