KC Politicos Don't Respond To Sweetness

A long time ago I learned that being nice gets you nowhere in Kansas City.

Therefore . . . I'm glad to see that . .

After this blog beat up on a sham meeting by The Missouri Civil Rights Committee . . . Reporting on the subject was pretty much a nearly word for word duplication of the sentiments that I had previously expressed regarding Latino discrimination in The Kansas City, Missouri School District.

Credit to Gilbert Guerrero, superintendent of the Alta Vista Charter School with the Guadalupe Centers for noting . . . "The Latino community does not trust the Kansas City School District."

  1. I was interested in this meeting, so I attended. I was pleased to see that both Gilbert Guerrero and John Fierro were both featured panelists on the agenda. They both gave compelling information, as both expressed many, many years of experience with the district. their insight was telling, and they hit the nail on the head. Marilyn Simmons was asked what she would do for the hispanic students. She actually said she would be supportive of some schools for latinos similar to the the african centered schools. I hope they hold her feet to the fire and make her do something for the latinos. There will be a written transcript from the meeting, so she can't deny she said it.

  2. Question? When John Rois was Board President and Sandy Mayer was also on the board and at the time they had the support of Barnes, Ragsdale, & Byrd. All you need is 5 votes to make a change in a program, begin a new program, even if it is a pilot program. This was back in the late 90's 98 or 99. Where were you then? Why didn't you stand up?

  4. When John Rios and Sandy Mayer were on the board, the Latino percentage was 3%. John was instrumental in getting Ed Marquez appointed as drop out coordinator. They also had a Latino advisory committee, and several programs. John Fierro and Enrique were appointed to be parent liaisons. John was always pushing a bi-lingual school, but the numbers would always be thrown back in his face. He was a great supporter of the latino community, and Sandy helped get him votes for his programs. He was a great board president. It's too bad he's not there now.
