Kansas City News Dead Baby Nomenclature

Something interesting to note about the way local media uses language to push foward their agenda . . .

A RATHER PERCEPTIVE AND AWESOME TKC READER NOTICES AN INTERESTING ANGLE TO POLITICALLY CORRECT KANSAS CITY STAR COVERAGE OF A LOCAL MURDER!!!

"The story in the Star today about the pregnant woman (nine months pregnant) killed along with her unborn child is alarming: The headline specifically (and deliberately) referred to a "fetus" rather than using the term child or baby."
There's no mention the of a dead kid in the headline: "Pregnant woman and fetus killed in Armour Boulevard shooting" and commenters are crying bloody murder. On the bright side, TV news is appropriately using the term "unborn child."

An even more interesting part of the story is that TKC Readers with a conscience claim that this should be a murder count of 2 instead of one but there just might be an effort hold down the local homicide totals and sacrafice the very real acknowledgment that a child was also killed during this homicide.

  1. This is a damn shame and it's enough for me to cancel my subscription to that rag.

  2. It's not a kid as long as it's still in utero - it remains a fetus until delivery. Just ask the IRS - they are not dependents until they pop out, reagrdless of how much money you spend on the pregnancy.

  3. I thought there were laws on the books that allowed a murder charge when the unborn child was past a certain stage. either way, I agree it does show a slanted agenda by the star. While the semantics of when a fetus becomes a person are debatable, 9 months is certainly human life.

  4. If, as the daily rag refers to it, is a "fetus", why was "it" rushed to the hospital in an attempt to "save" it?
There are laws on the books regarding this type of thing and case law on file - right here in river city, that make this a douible murder period, paragraph, done.
Seems duplicitous that The Star screams "bloody murder" when someone like George Tiller commits a late term abortion, all of a sudden its a human life, but when a thug on the streets does it with a .357, its not a human life but a fetus.

Where's Yael and Lewis on this one?

  5. Next it will be "12 year old ex-fetus killed in driveby."

  6. Whatever. Why don't you guys just call it an "Unborn Adult"? After all, it would have been an adult eventually. Oh, or "un-aged senior citizen"?

  7. TKC, a closet right-wing wackjob, or a schizophrenic? Have you taken your med today, tone-bone? Has the disability check arrived?

  8. I can't believe you people are arguing over whether it was a fetus or what. A 19 year old woman was murdered and now there are two fucking pussy ass guys running around probably waiting to do it again. Sometimes you asshats with your above everyone else's intellectual abilities makes me want to take a shit.

  9. You got it, 2:29. Another murder on Armour Blvd. Hyde Park will protest the violence. Meanwhile, what is the Mayor doing or Corwin? Handing out speeding tickets on 71, no doubt.

  10. Read Orwell's 1984 and digest the concept of double speak. It is endemic in print "NEWS" --Which is nothing but opinion now days.

  11. I don't see the big deal in the headline. That is the scientific term of an "unborn child" past the embryonic stage up until it has exited the uterus. However, I do agree there should be 2 murder counts considering the child could have definitely lived outside the mother.

  12. Dear Mr. Tony: Well, Cowtown continues to "roll up the score." Depending on whether you count the unborn child or not, with the mother of this child and the person shot today on 12th Street, we are up to 103 or 104 homicides for 2009. There is a chance we could achieve a real national distinction this year: Be the only city in the nation of any size to have more homicides in 2009 than in 2008!! (All over the country cities are recording record low homicides for 2009--but not cowtown!!) Sincerely and Respectfully, Ernest Evans

  13. Why won't Beth do something dramatic and save us? After all she has had such a great week.

  14. Nothing to bring out the nuts like the mention of a medical term applied to this situation.

Never mind that both are dead. Let's make this a religous and moral debate NOT about crime, but about the crazy pro life agenda.

Does anyone care about the death of either? Or just the TERM used for it.

  15. i think it is amusing what teachings of the catholic church you have chosen to be indignant about. at this point it is semantics and you dont have the courage to address the subject in reality.

  16. Tony, congratulations to you for making a good stand on this issue. Be careful, it looks like you are finally growing up.

  17. Ok. First let me correct the simple mistake... Ashley was 25 not 19. Her boyfriend was 19. Secondly... it was a baby. Everyone here saw that baby moving like crazy fighting for oxygen in her stomach. Next, fetus vs baby shouldn't be the question. The question is why it took so damn long for police to arrive when we are only 3 blocks away? The ambulance lost precious time cuz KC's finest took forever to clear the scene. That baby could have made it. It was the procedure of our police department that cost that child's life. And to be a witness to such pisses me off!

  18. This is truly the stupidest, most inane discussion I've ever seen.

  19. wow. Yours was the most useless comment.

I hate to say it but Tony has a point. Sad to see the star using the PC handbook.

  20. Ugh. Breaks my heart to read the witness account of the baby struggling. I work in news - we said "unborn child," though the baby was "technically" a fetus as well. I do think when she was just two weeks from her due date and the baby could've survived - she's a baby. Period.

  21. News flash:

Technically, officially, if it's unborn, it's a fetus, folks.

You can get all emotional and irrational and indignant but it is what it is. Take your case for the Supreme Court elsewhere.
