FUND COMBAT TAX RENEWAL: OR ELSE!!!

KCPT Week In Review has provided the only real debate over The COMBAT Tax Renewal so far given that the Paper-of-record is apparently pushing yet another local tax.

It was a pretty good show for a change.

What I noticed:

Former COMBAT Program Administrator, Jim Nunnelly inadvertently gave a perfect excuse to vote NO saying something akin to, "COMBAT is tied to every aspect of funding in Jackson County and almost every social service agency in Kansas City"

I keep finding more excuses to like Richard Tolbert who might as well have shown up wearing a "LEGALIZE IT" T-shirt.

Market Research dude Patrick Tuohey made a lot of great points and seemed like he stifle laughter at the horrible arguments in support of the tax.

I thought Jackson County Prosecutor Jim Kanatzar's head was going to explode from the mere possibility that someone would dare disagree with him while providing facts to indicate that he was incorrect. Luckily, he was okay as he quickly retreated into "It's not a new tax!!!" rhetoric.

Anyhoo . . . Thinking about the COMBAT Tax Renewal Today . . . I can't help but notice that most of the marketing for the new levy comes off like a threat. To wit . . .

Here are the Top Ten Hyperbolic claims that just might come to pass if Kansas City doesn't approve even more COMBAT Tax Money:

10. Independence Meth Mullets might make a comeback in a non-ironic way.

9. Suspended drug courts will continue serving as a great example of how important of a priority it is for COMBAT to not simply just put brown people and po'folk in jail.

8. No more hair gel money for County Exec. Mike Sanders.

7. County Legislator Theresa Garza just might have to make a statement on a controversial issue.

6. Locals will finally have to FINALLY decide the great Drug House vs. Vacant House Debate.

5. Cheap and legal weed could spark economic growth, undermine drug dealers and make violence in the narcotics trade unnecessary and less prevalent.

4. More competition for local crack hos. Think of it as a stimulus in reverse in every sense of the word.

3. If COMBAT Tax Renewal doesn't pass the terrorist win, just like in Afghanistan but without the GOP satisfaction of blaming Obama.

2. Jackson County might have to actually reevaluate their priorities and determine whether or not fighting crime is as important as subsidizing the Chiefs.

1. Calvin "Creampuff" Williford just might have to tear himself from campaign catering services to accept a Nobel Prize for breaking the First law of Thermodynamics given that his nasty public image would be responsible for destroying a self-perpetuating tax funded by Jackson County.

Comments

  1. On TV the kept talking about the audit that will not be done until after the vote has taken place. Why did they schedule the vote before the audit? It sounds very suspicious just like the County to try to hide the problems and get the money first.

  3. KCPT did an excellent job in presenting both sides of the issue. Why isn't this kind of debate in The Star?

  4. COMBAT has two basic purposes. One is to fund police and prosecution which free up general funds to be used for other purposes. The second is to create jobs for a lot of cronies. For its basic purposes it has been a success.
Does anyone seriously think drug use would be substantially different had the tax never been put in place?

  5. Say You're Sorry Sanders11/2/09, 8:59 AM

Pat O'Neill is a messaging genius! Who else would have thought of connecting violent-chaos in Iraq with our neighborhoods?

Who cares if he had to rely on a reformed-junkie to come up with rhetoric dripping with level of offensiveness designed to put the fear of race riots and drug-crazed mobs in the heads of nervous white people, Pat O'Neill did it.

Brilliant! I wonder if his businss card actually carries the slogan: "Race-baiting for Pay."

  6. If we vote for combat does that mean that KANSAS CITY will be like IRAQ without drugs?
    Pat loves Kansas City.

  7. Not Pat O'Neill11/2/09, 9:18 AM

Gee Mike, I am sorry I guess that one went too far. Do you think if I would have just paid Mary O’Halloran to say it on Ruckus the Iraq remark would have been more sensitive? I usually do that kind of thing but I just got sloppy. I will knock 25 cents off the bill.

  8. Expect more of this from O'Neill11/2/09, 9:34 AM

Look out Sly, Pat O'Neill is running Mike Burke's campaign and they intend to win those conservative, white, Catholics who are some of the meanest bigots known to humankind.

  9. Say NO to lies and ethics violations11/2/09, 10:17 AM

Sanders is now using the Democrat Party's as another committee to intervene in this Election, in violation of Missouri Election Laws. This message just came out from the Jackson County Democrat Party via email.

    REMINDER ABOUT TUESDAY'S CRITICAL ELECTION

Tuesday's vote is critical to local law enforcement agencies and dozens of community and faith-based programs that provide treatment and rehabilitation to individuals and families ravaged by drug abuse and crime. Please consider voting yes to continue COMBAT funding for another 7 years. This is not a new tax, only a renewal. More information's on-line at COMBATworks.org. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  10. Sanders is a very angry man. If his hairgel is gone, he might have to go to something else.

Using a recovering drug addict on the slick and on the media buy was sheer stupidity. Who the hell is going to feel sympathetic to a fuck up who had her door busted in? We are out here working our rears off and not getting ahead of the bills, yet we are suppose to reach down to the bottom of our empty pocket to pay so this bitch can get counseling or whatever? Then you throw in REAL VOLUNTEER ARMED SERVICE MEMBERS FIGHTING IN IRAQ and DEMEAN them for your political gain???? WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING JIM KANATZAR and the rest of the COMBAT JACKASSES WHEN YOU SAID "YEAH, LET"S GO WITH THIS"?

My Vote? NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO..........

  13. it's really hard to find FACTS about this tax's benefits or accomplishments. nick haines is good. the debate on KC week in review overall led me to decide it's better to wait until after the audit to vote "yes," if at all.

people want to see numbers: employees / salaries, courts' dockets, etc. kanatzer could have come much more prepared instead of just saying, "it reduces recidivism." and the girl scout quote was terrible.

tolbert had a good point about separating the funding / not convoluting things.

Aren't these the same terrorists who call up the Late Breaking Investigator's to tell them to bring their cameras to Super Flea in Northeast to watch them bust the Smoke Shops, while wearing ski masks and flashing their automatic weapons?

Tony, when are you gonna do a series on the Cop/Industrial Complex and their ditchweed burning commando raids, property theft, money laundering, and continued assault on the Constitution, while at the same time they continue their shift from civilian law enforcement to paramilitary hit squads/revenue enhancers for the county?

    I agree.

If they win the vote, they'll probably go out and buy a Stryker vehicle complete with an RPG fence and Cobham armor to run around Jackson county making assaults on late-paying property tax hoodlums.

They'll probably open up a Government account at the U.S. Cavalry store in Radcliffe, KY so they can get the latest military goodies too.
