MAYOR FUNKHOUSER CLAIMS RED LIGHT CAMERAS LOSE MONEY!!!

A quote from Mayor Funkhouser on Red Light Cameras
The Mayor responded that the red lights were not installed in order to collect money, but for safety reasons. Far too many people were running red lights and putting themselves and others in danger of being killed, he said. He explained further that the money goes into the City's general fund to be used for funding City services, and that the money being collected from the fines is not great enough to cover the cost of enforcing the fines and installing the lights. He sees this as a cost associated with keeping residents safe.
Now here's the disturbing thing . . .

Either Mayor Funkhouser doesn't know what he's talking about (likely) or he just publicized that Red Light Cameras are a waste of money. Either option isn't very good.

I'm checking right now in order to see if the Mayor's claim is based on fact or any available data or if it's simply a bit of misguided political rhetoric.

If the Mayor is right: Wouldn't money for Red Light Cameras be better spent fighting violent crime with more police officers on the street?

And if the Mayor is wrong . . .

  1. The Mayor is right. Definetly the incidents of speeding through the lights on 71 has almost stopped. The deterrent of knowing they are there slows people down and holds them accountable leading to a safer intersection(s).

Definetly a safety issue, not a revenue generating issue, get off his ass Tony (might be good for you to do that too !).

  3. Tony is right. Spend that money somewhere else. Why should Kansas City pay for double for fines in taxes and on the street?

  8. Um, wouldn't red light cameras make intersections safer and free up resources to fight crime elsewhere?
Isn't that kind of the point?

"Wouldn't money for Red Light Cameras be better spent fighting violent crime with more police officers on the street?" = Tony speak for Mexicans need entitlement jobs
