Waiting for Justice in Kansas City

Once again there's a delay in deciding something that everybody already knows in Kansas City.
The Tax Increment Financing Commission of Kansas City delayed until August its decisions on whether the city’s affirmative action policy was violated during construction of the H&R Block headquarters and, if so, what the remedies should be.
They say that "justice delayed is justice denied" but in this case it's just making a joke of something that people in Kansas City have known all along . . . Downtown development was mostly intended to push po'folk and minorities out of the loop and the construction process did not attempt to include minority contractors . . . These things are facts even though many folks feel differently about their merit. Another fact: Big business mostly runs local government . . . I always assumed as much but some folks will have to wait until August in order to find out for sure.

UPDATE . . . On the other hand, I'm not sure today was a total loss. One of the things to come out of this was a promise by the TIF commission to look at even more aspects of minority hiring in this case and not just the debacle between Rodriguez Electrical and R.F. Fisher . . . Who knows what other missteps might turn up in the process . . . Furthermore, there's also a call to look into the efficacy of all minority hiring in Kansas City development projects . . . Especially when companies are getting HUGE tax benefits. So there was a bit of progress made today from what I hear.

Developing . . .

  3. Such a shame. Maybe they should cancel the whole program.

  4. I agree with anon 6:20. Let's cancel this program of companies like H&R Block and J.E. Dunn profiting from tax incentive programs and then blaming the minorities!

I have to agree with you on one point Tony even if I don't follow some of your racial politics. There is no reason that this Block deserved a TIF so big. They already had a building in the middle of Kansas City. Paying for them to get another one should have been out of the question if City wasn't always so eager to give taxpayer money away.

  8. Buy they hired every minority contractor that bid on the project! How is that not giving people an opportunity?

  9. You have only scrathed the surface of the corruption at city hall. JE Dunn has threatened to sue the city and destroy its minority contractor program. The few minority business owners that have been getting rich off the city are scared to death of that happening. The whole thing smells to high heaven but the FBI nor the attorney general nor the Star will do the real investigation that is needed. The documents are all public, you just have to do the homework. (oh, and have a council that actually cares about the taxpayer)

  11. Well this is as good a place as any to make this comment. TKC mentioned some msg I made about how little influence bloggers have on the scheme of local life....

he linked to me and I got a sum total of just 35 more links than usual.

My POINT was that we bloggers don't have much influence, no matter how hard we work and how cool are our enterprise stories which are cherry picked and stolen by 4, 5, 9, 41 and the Star and Pitch.

No one loves us bloggers but we're clearly on their list of places to look to steal news from!

And without being credited, of course. is it worth the effort? Well it clearly is to TONY. But me... uh no. I only do this after sixpm. Iv'e retired from journalism. And I also know that blogging doesn't at ALL have the kind of reach that I did when I was on teevee news! Hence, I don't get too wound up about blogging. Sigh. rman sed it.

  12. Quit yer bitchin'

At least one minority person got paid real well. He'll spread the wealth around the community. The Hispanics are well known to take care of their own.

  13. That's a shame. Maybe nobody is entitled to a contract and they should have to compete like everyone else.

  14. why the fuck do any of you idiots think bloggers have ANY INFLUENCE ON ANYTHING WHATSOEVER? LMFAO. You mean to tell me you are trying to INFLUENCE people? Radioman and Tony? LOL. This is some waaay funny shit. since when does a bad opinion column coincide with logic and reason? You guys need to do a better job of grabbing your audience with some basic idea truth and insight instead of entertaining them with skewed ideas, opinions and rabble rousing IMO. Just a thought and you have no credibility anyway. It's pretty much over for any of you if you seek to be taken as anything more than agenda-laden pseudo-anarchists FWIW.
