I was just reminded by a rather new, but still awesome KICKASS TKC TIPSTER that renewal for the City Sticker will soon be underway.
Money raised from The City Sticker - Which isn't really a sticker at all but just another fee - Goes to support the Parks . . . Here's the problem . . . The renewal will come at a time when there's at least 3 other tax increases on the ballot.
Once again, this is bad news for Kansas City Parks, Fountains and any hope of getting those stinky port-a-potties away from city playgrounds in favor of real plumbing.
And while neighborhood folks in this town are normally inclined to say to NO to any and all new taxes I have a feeling that folks might open their hearts and wallets on this one, or at the very least, they'll be more easily open to persuasion by an upcoming massive local campaign to push the fee renewal.
Parks should be under the Council. The Parks Board is a self serving waste of administrative energy.
ReplyDeleteThis city needs to centralize administration.
The above comment is so off base it hurts. If the Parks was under the City Council every bit of money they have the ability to raise would be stolen just like the $250,000 that Cauthern has encumbered for some woman at the economic union.
ReplyDeleteThe reason that the City has such a great Park system is because they keep separation. There is even a Friends of deal that is separate from the Parks system so that wealthy people will give to the fund to help the system. If the Parks was under the City you would have a lot of PRIVATE RICH PEOPLE who would STOP paying to cut the grass --etc on Ward Parkway and Gillum to name only two. They do that as a GIFT to th people of Kansas City.
Hey the only thing that Funky did right was get a fairly egalitarian group named to the Parks and Rec Board. Those five people have done some great things with the system and need to be thanked. Before Funky it was poor little rich boys play thing. Just take a look at the guys that tried to develop part of Penn Valley Park --guys on the old boy network Park and Rec board. We need to keep those dogs out of the hen house or we will end up with nothing for parks in KC
ReplyDeleteOkay now that we have heard from the Parks director and deputy director, I just have to chip in. Webster is and always was a major conflict of interest on the board. Stackhouse is so self-serving it's abominable, and the president is a mooch, taking baseball, starlight tickets and other freebies that are meant for the underpriveleged. He even used thousands of Parks dollars to go to a Harvard leadership course. Until they get a new board and new executive, the Parks dept will be screwed up.
ReplyDeleteif you live in k.c. you still pay for the sticker, they just don't give you one. they rolled the amount paid into your total taxes and skipped the part where they provide you with one.
ReplyDeletebut if most people have forgotten about it i'm sure you probably could sneak a new sticker out like the old fee and sticker never existed.
Don't count on citizens approving ANY taxes this year, Tony. Not even for parks, which I could spend a lot of time in right now since I have been laid off after over 20 years with my employer! I'll take advantage of any thing that will save me a few pennies!
