Supreme Court Nominee Pet Peeve

I'm not even going to pretend to get into debate or discussion regarding Obama's SCOTUS nominee Sonia Sotomayor . . . Other than the fact that I think at some point I've met her and she told me to stay in school.

Conservatives white dudes crying racism whenever any person of color gets ahead is nothing new. Thoughts from Kansas actually has a great post on this subject that's far more thoughtful than anything I would care to come up with . . .

Anyhoo . . . My problem is that for the past two days I've heard news people describe her as a "Latina Female" which is redundant . . . She's simply a Latina which implies she is, indeed, a female.

Here's the break down:

Latino - A term describing the ethnicity of a male belonging to a Spanish-speaking people or culture.

Latina - A term describing the ethnicity of a female belonging to a Spanish-speaking people or culture.

Latinos - (Because Spanish is a wonderfully intricate and sexist language) A term used to describe a large group of people (men and women) belonging to a Spanish-speaking culture . . . Generally used by so-called progressives when throwing a rapidly growing demographic under the bus regarding immigration policy. See: Claire McCaskill.

It's not that hard to remember . . . Despite the fact that most people simply use the term "Mexican" in unguarded, everyday speech . . . Which isn't always so incorrect.

TKC NOTE: None of this matters when viewing a recent photo gallery of Vida Guerra who is (or at least should be) defined by her big, beautiful booty and not any single ethnic nomenclature.

  1. Let the GOP and morons like Newt Gingrich and Pat Buchanan keep it up. Their antipathy to Sotomayor(and Obama) will help destroy the Republican Party. Good riddance.

  2. Justice Sodomy-er.

For a nation who wants blind justice, we've allowed the judicial selection process to become politicized by spending all day congratulating ourselves for nominating an empathetic "Latina Woman" who overcame great obstacles, none of which are qualifications for fairly interpretting laws.

If she wanted to share her background, she should have become an Olympic Athlete.

    Whatever sells newspapers.

  3. I get so sick of the media trying to read something into a document a nominee wrote several years ago and trying to spin it in their own direction. Who cares what adverb or adjective someone used, isn't all just about what your defination of "is" is?

  4. I be pokin' a Latina woman, there now I used it in the proper context.

  5. i work at a slowly dying media company in k.c. and my dept. head totally banned us from referring to an outside crew of contractors as "mexicans". most folks were confused, because, well, they were all from mexico. well, one guy was from cuba so we called him "the cuban". we ended up either calling them by their company name or just referred to them as "our latin american brothers".

so i guess you could say the PC brings all races together in the revolution.
