More Kansas City Blogger Meat!!!

Cubicle Gangsta is organizing another local blogger meet-up that actually sounds like a good time!!!

JP Wine Bar sounds like a good choice and I'm hoping that the even turns out well . . . Of course I'm not going but it's nice to see local bloggers taking the initiative to get together in order to create a more diverse "local blogging scene" (ew) which mostly doesn't exist in any MSM newroom and rarely/barely happens online either.

Gee Tony, wasn't that stretch of Walnut so much better when it was remarkable for the lack of empty storefronts and rodents. Now it's all been ruined by JP's Wine bar, other businesses and places to live.

Boy I wish we could have Tonyland back. Blight was so wonderful. Bring it back so Tony can be happy!

  2. Thanks for the plug (gross) tony. I hope everyone shows up, because JP Wine Bar needs all the press/business it can get right now. I've worked there for over a year, before P&L district was even open for business and it's certainly affected how many tables we fill. We see plenty of d-bags stroll by the bar on their way to Angels. Well, I guess that's okay. I less d-bag in my bar is not a bad thing.

  3. 6:53 WTF are you talking about? Tony just linked them so I don't think he hates them.

Grow the fuck up. Or Tony are you hating on yourself again just to piss me off.

God sometimes this place is such a dump.

    I need a drink, maybe at JP's.

  4. Tony always decries development and renewal. He belittles it as the realm of "urban hipsters" and yet here he rightly points out that redevelopment has provided an enjoyable place to go. It is the knee jerk opposition to development policy that Tony usually spews that gave us Funk and would deny that little stretch of Walnut around JP.

That is WTF I was talking about and if you had an Effing brain in your head it would have been clear.

Give up on the keyboard, go back to the crayons and be pissed off.

  5. Uh, Gangster, if things are so bad why did JP's expand it's space?

  6. Uh, Anonymous @ 8 am...JP expanded in 2006, around a year after they opened. As my post stated, after Power & Light officially opened its doors to patrons, we have seen a drop in ours.

  7. No, JP's expansion happened in June and July of 2007 (http://www.gonemild.com/2007/06/jp-wine-and-coffee-bar.html) but let's not let actual facts get in the way of your arguement of blaming P&L for your drop in patronage. Here's a couple of reasons that you might have seen a drop in business: Restaurant confusion, are we a coffee shop, a wine bar, or a dinner place. Hours confusion, open for coffee, open for lunch, open for dinner...wait...not open for coffee, not open for lunch now only open for dinner. Parking issues and that's not really your fault since there was more free parking until the lofters sucked up all the immediate parking. Still it doesn't help. The economy, hello, worst recession in 30 years is never good for restaurants that lean towards the upper end.
I know it's easier to whine about the competition (P&L, Crown Center, the Plaza) but it's not going to keep your restaurant open. It just makes you a whiner.

  8. so i got that wrong...beside the point. the fact is, since power and light has opened we've seen a drop in business. period. i know this because I WORK THERE. odd that i would have a greater understanding of this since you clearly don't work there. i do agree with your points. it's shitty that we don't have ample parking like we used to, mainly due to the loft/condo owners, but i know for a fact that people going to P&L do take what little parking is available to our patrons. i see it every weekend.

secondly, its common for restaurants to redefine themselves. especially when they see the competition across the street. for starters, being that the owner is operating a business, it was in the owners best interest to stop service in the morning and at lunch. regardless of P&L being open, JP didn't do much during the early hours. by adjusting the opening to a later time, overhead is saved.

restaurant confusion? i'm confused with that one. where does it say that a bar must be only one thing? our patrons come in for wine flights, small plates and top it off with espresso. sounds like a great time, at least you don't have to go three different places to be accomodated.

lastly, a whiner? no, i'm a hard working woman that works 2 jobs because i have to. i love my job and what we provide for the community. i care that my co-workers make enough money to pay their bills and feed their kids. i care that we provide the highest service and quality available. i don't want to see that bar fail, plain and simple, and i don't see you doing anything.

sorry for the long post tony but i know you love it when this happens.

  9. Gotta love that the biggest point of your argument is suddenly discarded when it turns out to be wrong. You're right I don't work there but as a customer I sure as hell help you keep your job. As for the parking since I work in the area I know just how much parking is available and frankly there's a lot more if 1) people actually walked more and 2) people stopped bitching about having to pay to park. I see parking lots sit empty not a block and a half from JP's during the times you're open. Again, don't blame P&L.
Yes it's absolutely common place for the evolution of restaurants to happen over time. However it creates problems when you're trying to build up brand loyalty with your customers. It gets really old trying to figure out what you're serving and when.
It's pretty funny when places like the Cigar Box can do decent lunch business but you guys couldn't yet you found the money to expand (take on more overhead) into the next space.

Where does it say a hard working woman can't also be a whiner. I'm glad you love your job. But what exactly do you want us to do? Tear down the P&L because you can't handle competition? Are you saying that if the P&L District had never been built you guys would be doing booming business at that location during this recession? You're not Town Topic of The Art of Pizza. You're a evening hours only bar/restaurant that's GOT to generate a higher percentage of per ticket sales to cover shorter hours, large stock of expensive wine, and recent expansion costs. Don't blame me or the P&L for the fact that you're not turning over more tables. Either you're giving the customers what they want enough that they continue to come back or you don't.
