There's a ground breaking hip-hop show coming up in Kansas City in less than one day.
I've heard they've even have a bit of a surprise in store for attendees.
Reach is slated to perform along with DJ Shad and quite a few other acts at the event on August 16 from 1 - 8pm . . . The best part, Hollapalooza '08 will be held at the Kansas City Repertory Theater.
I should note that this isn't KC gangsta rap so there most likely won't be any of the problems that sometimes accompany other hip-hop shows . . . To draw a simple comparison that hopefully won't offend anyone, I've always thought of these guys as modern day musicians in the same spirit as the jazz legends that once frequented this town . . . The acts playing this concert are akin to A Tribe Called Quest or Mos Def and a far cry other rappers that spend most of their time in jail.
The best part of this . . . It's local and features a bunch of home grown performers who have not only garnered a decent following and make this town's arts scene more diverse but also have managed to create a vibrant niche for an important aspect of Kansas City culture.
Perhaps we need to redefine what we mean by the term "groudbreaking" so no one gets too much false hope.
