KCTV5 recently broke a story regarding a local high school, a bad idea, bored teachers and silly experiment for Black History Month: A student committee at Schlagle High School wanted to do an experiment. In the experiment, the school was segregated by race to show what it was like in the 1960s.
Tuesday, each student was compared with a brown paper bag to decide if they were light or dark skinned, then they were separated from there. But unlike the 1960s, the darker skinned students were given the special treatment and extra benefits.I like the part about special privileges . . . I wonder if the Latinos were allowed to take off early to go to work.
Honestly, I can see where why a lot of people would be upset at this kind of thing: There has always been segregation and special privilege but very much like sex education (or the lack thereof) it's only supposed to sting and completely destroy students when they learn about it for themselves.
I am not sure what the problem was here. The student committee decided on the idea, so it was not as if the students did not agree with it. It was an experiment that lasted one day.
