The Sprint Center opens. So what?

If you're poor or a person of color in Kansas City, the Sprint Center opening shouldn't matter to you.

Let's not forget that minorities were excluded from the construction of the Sprint Center.

The glass which adorns the building was outsourced and manufactured in China.

And I shouldn't need to remind you of the following: TODAY'S OPENING OF THE SPRINT CENTER IS A DRAMATIC FAILURE GIVEN THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO ANCHOR TENANT FOR THE FACILITY!!!

Additionally, AEG now holds a virtual "arena monopoly" over Kansas City considering that they control both the Sprint Center and Kemper Arena . . . Once again this doesn't bode will for KC customers who want cheaper tickets and the move was approved by this City Council and not the last.

The plan for the Sprint Center to attract more customers for downtown businesses is inherently flawed when you remember that the same strategy didn't work for Kemper Arena and the West Bottoms. People will pay out the nose to see their event, but they aren't sticking around afterwards . . . KC's history has spoken to this truism.

In just the past couple of months we've seen that your average KC resident won't be able to afford tickets and the arena is YET ANOTHER KC attraction built with the more affluent people of JoCo in mind.

Finally, the parking situation is going to be a problem despite the propaganda run by The Star or City Council members. Already the owners of downtown parking lots are licking their chops (No homo) in anticipation of rates skyrocketing nearly 200 percent. Politicos and press people are happy to spin the problem by demonstrating walks on otherwise empty streets . . . But the FACT is that every City Hall official who IS NOT running for re-election knows that parking will be "tight and expensive" like a high class prostitute.

Sadly, few of these concerns are going to be raised today. Lazy (mostly female) reporters are going to be content collecting nothing but PR sound bytes while any critical thought regarding the real challenges facing the arena will be ignored in favor of promotional live blogging or other happy, meaningless news.

  1. Short on ideas? This is your third anti-arena anti-downtown anti-KC rant this morning.

The Sprint Center exceeded the requirements on minority contractors. What, you wanted it built 100% by Mexicans? Then it could hold 4 times as many people with the same space and the parking problem would be solved by putting the cars up on blocks all over the lawn.

  2. Dude, disagree with Tony all you want. His analysis is always overly pessimistic but don't lie about the minority hiring. The Sprint Center skimped and they had to return a lot of favors because of the oversight.

On the other hand I think eventually the place will get a team.

  3. Harlem Globetrotters are coming to Sprint Arena.
    Notice the name Harlem,

  4. Tony I would like to be the first to apologize for being white. Im sorry the minorities of this city have been cast aside. Im sorry that kansas city is one giant klan rally.Perhaps someday us crackers will come to our senses and let you folks of color play too. Hell who knows someday the majority of voters, mostly white, will stop being racist and elect a mayor of color. OOPs my bad, we did that already, howd that happen in such a racist enclave like KC>
You sir ar a douche nozzle and you play the race cad more than Sharpton.

Yep, I am sorry to tony. So sorry to keep everyone down.

    Give it a rest beaner.

  6. Yes, such a failure. I have tickets to 3 events in the next few weeks. That's 3 trips to downtown I wouldn't ordinarily be making. And yes, I will be at least dining down there before hand. Maybe I'll even grab a drink afterwards, too.

You are a liar. You will get in your car, and drive to the arena for these events, not ever be able to find a parking spot, and will drive straight back home. No one will ever stop and eat out beforehand or have a drink afterward. Tony says so.

  8. Sounds to me like Tony is just jealous that some of us actually work our asses off and enjoy entertainment, it is always easier to blame your own situation on others that look at yourself and do the hard work the rest of us do to climb your way to a better life!

  9. So what would everything look like if the people you want to be in charge were...hummmmmmmmm

  10. It's not about race, its about income. Tell your beaner pals not to have 18 Catholic kids and then maybe they could afford a god damn concert ticket.

  11. Tony doesn't give a fuck or he wouldn't rabble rouse all the time and he'd actually do something (solution) instead of just bitching (problem). Why does the Sprint center need an "anchor tenant" anyway? What's the big deal? If the new downtown is half as good as it's touted, then it will be self sustaining. Tony you are such a funny .

  12. I think Garth Brooks is the current anchor tenant.

  13. Tony you are dumb dumb dumb. You always turn everything into a race problem. If Mexicans had built the Sprint Center they wouldn't have finished it on time and it would have fallen apart in a few years! You are a race baiter my friend!

  14. Anon 12:39...that comment was snort-worthy, and oddly accurate.

  15. Gawd, it's easy to be a whiny, race-bating, nattering nabob of negativism!

  16. Once again, completely ignoring reality. Comments coming out of the tour today were almost 100% positive and you know what? I didn't hear a single person complain about parking and that's with 100,000 workers downtown who won't even be there when an event is going on. Ignoring all of the parking lots that are set at $10 for events. Ignoring the fact that you can park for FREE in the Crossroads or River Market or Plaza and just hop on the MAX for $1.25 if you don't want to walk. Just give up because you've already lost.

  17. Don't park in my lot suburbatroids!

  18. WARNING: WHITE GUY'S POST

2:01 forgot to mention that if mexicans did it, it would have been done in may of 07, cost half as much, and would have lasted the same amount of time before falling apart if built by a bunch of overweight union goobers from grain valley, belton, and tonganoxie.

  21. "If you're poor or a person of color in Kansas City, the Sprint Center opening shouldn't matter to you."

Guess it shouldn't have mattered to myself or the thousands of other black people I saw at the open house.

"The plan for the Sprint Center to attract more customers for downtown businesses is inherently flawed when you remember that the same strategy didn't work for Kemper Arena and the West Bottoms."

Ever thought about the fact that the West Bottoms is much more difficult to access than downtown?

"In just the past couple of months we've seen that your average KC resident won't be able to afford tickets and the arena is YET ANOTHER KC attraction built with the more affluent people of JoCo in mind."

Tickets for the CBE Classic start at $10; I'm planning on getting two $25 LOWER LEVEL seats for both nights.

"Finally, the parking situation is going to be a problem despite the propaganda run by The Star or City Council members blahblahblahyakkityyak"

There's a $1.25 solution to all your parking woes. I'll let you figure it out.

Instead of getting a sandy vag about just about everything in KC, why not move? You will surely be missed...
