After so many weeks, The Mayor's nearly indecipherable stance in the Semler debate still doesn't make any sense; he supported her appointment but said time and again that he didn't necessarily support her views on immigration.
Fine.
But the following is not up for debate: Among the local Latino Leadership, Mayor Funkhouser has absolutely NO CREDIBILITY and many if not all of the Latino leaders with any real political power have openly expressed their regret for supporting him.
However, unless there is a recall (that still isn't out of the question), 3-4 years is a long time to wait for access to KC's highest office.
So, can Mayor Funkhouser afford to ignore the Latino Community for the next 4 years or is there some chance of reconciliation?
TKC believes that there is and I can sum it up in one word:
SANCTUARY!!!
Already there are several KC faith based organizations (like the local chapter of the Interfaith Worker Justice group) looking for the City Council to renew a 1986 action which stated that Kansas City was essentially a place welcoming to immigrants and all people despite their race, religion and or background. TKC has already raised the subject previously. Additionally, those KC boosters who constantly talk of KC living up to and earning a place next to the "major league cities" across America like San Francisco and New York should note that those cities already have similar legislation and ordinances in place.
Therefore, if Mayor Funky wants to patch things up with Local Latinos (and let's face it he's going to need their support sooner rather than later) then this is an excellent place to start.
Any kind of measure making KC one of many "Sanctuary Cities" would not only promote business and further increase community cooperation among Latinos with law enforcement in order to prevent violent crime but also mend the very real division between Mayor Funky and the Latino Leadership. Also, a call for sanctuary (that was basically already approved in the past) would show Kansas City's true character to groups like La Raza and the NAACP who openly question the Mayor's stance in support of a hate, vigilante group and are subsequently questioning their business relationship with this town.
The ball is the Mayor's court on this issue and local leaders and reporters with interest in this subject should take Mayor Funky to task on this topic because if he rejects this proposal from Kansas City's most important Latino (TKC!!!) then it's obvious that he not only stubbornly stands in the corner of Frances Semler but he also might as well enlist as a member of the Mintuemen.
Not a bad idea Tony. Is this the first constructive column you've ever published?
ReplyDeleteTony's objectification of women and misogyny(and failure to grasp the meaning of "satire") notwithstanding, he's right about this. Kansas City passed one sanctuary resolution and should do so again. Let's be "world class," let's truly recognize "globalism," and open our city to all people, regardless of immigration status. Instead of giving in to fear-mongering(Lou Dobbs, Frances Semler), let's welcome all who want to live and work here, no matter where they are from. Turn away from fear and accept immigrants. They can only help the city....
ReplyDeleteJust a quick search of the city's ordinances using the terms "immigrant", "immigrants" and "sanctuary" comes up with 26 references. These are resolutions not ordinances.

If there was such an ordinance (law) it would be listed.
According to Law.com dictionary, "ordinance
n. a statute enacted by a city or town"
resolution
n. a determination of policy of a corporation by the vote of its board of directors. Legislative bodies also pass resolutions, but they are often statements of policy, belief or appreciation, and not always enactment of statutes or ordinances.
Resolutions, therefore, do not have the force of law.
Besides, the city already accepts consular cards from most, if not all, countries as valid identification for those, presumably, who have no other form of identification.
The KCPD also accepts consular cards as valid I.D.
KC is already a sanctuary city.
Wow, a post with an actual idea!
ReplyDeleteIt might be a more or less token measure, but I don't see how it could hurt.
This is pointless. The federal government controls immigration law and enforcement. If you think otherwise you are in the camp of Kobach who thinks that the state or even worse, local, governments can decide immigration policy. (Kobach thinks local governments can be used as immigration enforcement).
ReplyDeleteIs this just going to become the La Raza blog? Because it is getting a lot more boring.
Also: Great article in the Pitch Burnt ends between Funkhouser and Jerry (who lives on a rainbow by Sandstone- yea) on the Semler and dog park situations.
Is La Raza just going to shake down KC until we all capitulate to whatever demands you have?
ReplyDeleteNo we will not make it become a sanctuary for lawlessness because of a Parks Board appointment.
Permit me to paraphrase Tony...
ReplyDeleteAn invitation:
"Come one, come all. We won't ask, we won't tell. The 9-11 Commission can go to hell."
Thank God you have absolutely no power Tony!! This is the worst idea for Kansas City. Crime is already bad enough, making this a "sanctuary" city would only make it much worse. Plus whats left of the white people would leave too.
ReplyDeleteI guess it would be like living in Mexico. Why not save the worthless effort and just move there?
A sanctuary resolution and an ordinance would be a great first step but it's not the only thing that would Mayor Funky can do.
ReplyDeleteYou're right Tony. Most every Latino I've talked to regrets ever voting for him.
You need a bigger circle of latino friends
ReplyDeleteHow about Tony going back to Mexico. That would be one way to settle it.
ReplyDeleteLOL 8:59 The Pitch is promoting their rag on Tony's Blog. Can they tell us where to buy Viagra as well? Geez.
ReplyDeleteBut Tony, wouldn't an ordinance or resolution welcoming all religions have to include Wiccans as well? And this is a group you have derided in the past.
ReplyDeleteLet's see you sneak your way out of this fact. If you want tolerance for one group then you have to promote tolerance for all.
Oh please - the only people who whine more than Mexicans are are these so-called "wiccans." At least a Mexican can mow a lawn and make a damned taco.
ReplyDeleteHey 1:27p.m., how can Tony go back to Mexico when he was born and raised in Kansas City?
ReplyDeleteKC can't become a true sanctuary city. It would be a direct violation of "Jakes Law". Sorry, try again.
ReplyDeleteNope, wrong again.
ReplyDeleteJake's law applies to local and State warrants. Immigration is a federal offense and local and state authorities don't have jurisdiction.
Too bad you don't know the law you're trying to mistakenly enforce.
Let the feds do their job, you're obviously too incompetent to handle it.
If someone under arrest has a federal detainer, Immigration or not, and that individual is released without contacting the agency that issued the detainer, then the releasing agency is in violation of Jakes Law. It is a simple NCIC check that is required by all law enforcement agencies.
ReplyDeleteSorry Nazi, you don't know what you are talking about.

ReplyDeleteGoogle it you idiot.
Sorry, I forgot to sign my last two entries.
Nope, because it takes more than the length of a field stop to determine immigration status. Sometimes it takes months. Are you suggesting we incarcerate people for months to determine their immigration status?
ReplyDeleteSorry not a good plan. Try again.
Report all you want and comply with Jake's Law but ICE receives thousands upon thousands of reports and it can't follow up every one.
Get a clue Craig. Learn the law and how government really works.
