Funkhouser's stubborn endorsement of a vigilante/hate group member could cost Kansas City Millions!!!

A special thanks to a TKC Tipster who sent this item my way . . . Recently, an item on Prime Buzz clearly reveals the stupidity of Mayor Funkhouser refusing to accept Parks Board/Minuteman member Frances Semler's resignation and brings to light the fact that the controversy over her appointment is not quite finished.
The nation's largest Hispanic rights group is warning it may cancel its 2009 convention here because of a controversial Kansas City park board member.

The head of the National Council of La Raza said Thursday that the organization is already looking at several other cities because of the appointment of Frances Semler.

Meanwhile, Kansas City officials have heard that the NAACP might be reconsidering its 2010 convention here, although no one on Thursday said they had heard directly from the national organization.

Losing the two national conventions would cost the local economy $15 million plus the incalculable hit the city's image would take, said officials, who added that they are working hard to prevent it.
EVERYONE, the City Council and even his own staff told Funkhouser that being so stubborn on this issue was a mistake and now it seems as if the fact that he endorsed someone belonging to a vigilante group could dog him until it's time for re-election given that National Civil Rights groups have taken notice of this issue and reportedly plan to cut economic ties and embarrass Kansas City.

I heard a bit of this talk about canceling the La Raza convention before but now it seems that a reaction to Funkhouser's dismissal of the Latino Community's concerns is gaining more momentum. Additionally, considering Funkhouser's "Black Part of town" ideology, his failed attempt to fire the highest ranking Black guy at City Hall and his overall inability to connect with the Eastside Leadership . . . Funkhouser just seems to be incapable of dealing with the diverse populace of KC Proper who who can't be sorted and written off like numbers on a balance sheet.

Furthermore, talk on this front has even more impact on the nature of political discourse in this City given that: In the early rounds of this debate Kansas City's suburban neighbors cried to the heavens about Semler's appointment and her controversial stance on immigration, yet these same people won't be around to pay the price of lost convention money or KC being portrayed as an intolerant town.

Put simply, the suburban pundits who spread their anti-Latino vitriol don't live here . . . They hide away in the "safe" suburbs and on talk radio radio stations based in JoCo and only show up to holler and scream their demands. If Funkhouser and his staff would have realized that KC politics doesn't work like a call-in talk show they might have handled this situation better.

The Prime Buzz article reports that other KC officals are scrambling to find some kind of compromise to the situation (City Manager Wayne Cauthen has already taken a meeting on the topic) but I suggest that only Funkhouser can remedy the situation that he created.

Furthermore, the damage doesn't stop there . . . Since Prime Buzz is reporting the talk from La Raza and other rumors I haven't heard from the NAACP up till this point . . . I might as well reveal that the same sentiments have been expressed (about skipping KC as a destination) from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Word around the campfire is that President & CEO - Michael Barrera doesn't want his membership of Latino business people spending their money in a town that is standing in the corner of nativists and Anti-Latino extremists. Undoubtedly, all of these groups flexing their economic muscle will take a toll but even worse the PR damage to Kansas City could be irreparable.

Yet I feel like I MUST reiterate that these extremist viewpoints of (some of) our suburban neighbors, who whole heartedly endorse the Minutemen and are decidedly hostile to any notions of diversity in Kansas City, don't really represent the true character of this town. In our golden era KC was a convention destination that greeted the world with open arms. Only earlier this summer this town was abuzz and rolling out the red carpet for a group of Japanese tourists. Therefore this backlash of against foreign people, languages and cultures isn't so much the product of KC's history but represents the inherent racism and intolerance of those lurking behind the dividing lines of the metro area and using their influence to prop up the same kind of intolerance which is largely responsible for the massive white flight to the suburbs in the first place. If you listened to talk radio during the controversy earlier this summer folks were constantly having to amend their viewpoints regarding the Semler debate, "I don't live in Kansas City, but . . ." Also, no matter where people in KC Proper stand on the topic of immigration it's safe to say that the large bloc of support Mayor Funkhouser received from liberal, progressive voters in Midtown has very little in common with the ultra-right wing agenda of the anti-immigration crowd. But I digress . . .

The point here is that "the Mayor having is way" is not a good enough reason for KC losing a hell of a lot of convention money and being labeled as an intolerant town. Furthermore, it makes no sense for Mayor Funky to continue being so stubborn when, in fact, he claims that he doesn't support Semler's viewpoints. During the first phase of this controversy Mayor Funkhouser simply ignored and wrote off the concerns of KC's Latino leadership when he wasn't trying to play "divide and conquer" at the behest of his naive and inexperienced (and now demoted) PR flack Joe Miller . . . Now that Kansas City's purse strings and image have come into play it's time for Mayor Funkhouser to stop pandering to to the carpetbaggers from the suburbs who don't have any stake in the future of KC Proper and he MUST realize that the interests (image and commerce) of Kansas City are more important than offering kickbacks to the people, like Frances Semler, who worked on his campaign.

  1. La Raza? Are you f'ing kidding me Tony? How is that not a hate group in your crazy worldview?

  2. For one, they don't stand around with guns or encourage profiling of anybody based on their ethnicity or accent.

What about the NAACP? Are they a hate group too? Because La Raza is pretty much their Latino equivalent.

There are Latino separatists and all kinds of weird, fringe political characters but when you try to cast NCLR as that kind of group it just proves you don't know what you're talking about or have contact with any of the members of the MAINSTREAM political advocacy group.

Stop believing everything you hear on Talk Radio. Just because it's entertaining doesn't mean it's true. That should be my new slogan for this blog.

  8. Hmmm Convention money, related to sales taxes, which can be used to make payments on Downtown TIFs. Oh, I can see why Funk would keep the Brown-Shirted Lady around on "principle" now. Maybe Frances friend Phyllis Schlafly, the beer heiress and founder of Eagle Forum, should just send Kansas City a $15M check to make up for what her friend has caused?

Actually it is worse than the lost convention dollars, through his insistence on keeping Semler, Funk is making us poster children for bigoted behavior. Gee Thanks Funk. Much appreciated. This will probably make it MUCH easier to sign a regular tenant for the (No Parking) Sprint Center. Oh yes, this all helps SO very much.

    Great post, Tony.

  11. Lack of hotel space, parking, nearby amenities and a 'hick' atmosphere has caused far more conventions to X Kansas City off their calander than racism ever will: if what you contend were true, than La Raza [much less the NAACP]would never have even considered KC as a host until such time as Troost was dismantled as the city's defacto DMZ.

  27. The term “La Raza” has its origins in early 20th century Latin American literature and translates into English most closely as “the people,” or, according to some scholars, “the Hispanic people of the New World.” The term was coined by Mexican scholar José Vasconcelos to reflect the fact that the people of Latin America are a mixture of many of the world’s races, cultures, and religions. Some people have mistranslated “La Raza” to mean “The Race,” implying that it is a term meant to exclude others. In fact, the full term coined by Vasconcelos, “La Raza Cósmica,” meaning the “cosmic people,” was developed to reflect not purity but the mixture inherent in the Hispanic people. This is an inclusive concept, meaning that Hispanics share with all other peoples of the world a common heritage and destiny.

It's pretty bad that you think you are right but illegal is illegal. I think you should have the convention in New Mexico.
    * Kansas City is going to make all kinds of money with the new $250 miilion Sprint Arena that was paid for by the taxpayers.

  32. Who cares about conventions. Cities like NY and SF can make it on tourism and culture. Most other cities need a diverse economy. Taxing the hell out of industries that generate jobs and taxes so some restaraunts and hotels can survive is ridiculous.

Funky should just tell the so called "minority leaders" to move to KCK and take the tree huggers, development lawyers, chamber of commerce and all the other idiots, crooks and wackos with you.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow look at the racism here! You can try to paint La Raza however you want, but the fact is that not only does La Raza consist of members of ALL ethnicities and nationalities, but almost every celebrity in the country belongs to the organization. Plus, The President of both La Raza and The Hispanic Chamber were born and raised in Kansas City.

They aren't extreme leftists, They consistently have supported members of both political parties. In fact, The President of The Hispanic Chamber WAS one of the biggest Republican donors in this country and state until they decided to call open season on all Latinos for political gain.

They worked their ass off to bring the convention to Kansas City. There is nobody to blame but the racists here who are constantly making Kansas City the butt of every joke around the country, and the elected officials that pander to their uneducated mentality.

    ReplyDelete
  34. What nobody is mentioning here is the Public Relations disaster this has become.

Give up the 15 million, sure. But when they whiny groups get on every talk show in the country and say that Kansas City is racist THAT will have a negative impact on KC. With the Sprint Center and the Power and Light District needing every dime they can muster, it's just not good for business which is a lot more important than politics.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Paintman everything that you write not only doesn't make sense but has uneducated written all over it. The Latino Community's concerns are gaining more momentum because around the country because elected officials are using racism, segregation and bigotry against Latinos for political gain. The only websites that call the "La Raza" an extremist group are those websites that promote racism and bigotry. You want hate groups and nativist groups go to the SPLC's website. There you can find a list of the 250+ hate nativist groups that have opened shop since 2000. The Minutemen who use neo-nazis to recruit for them are one.

To associate all Latinos with MS-13, guns and drugs, is just plain racist and stupid. Especially since only 12% of all gun owners, who are majority white, have registered guns with law enforcement. Not to mention, half of those guns purchased were not even from legal federally licensed gun dealers. On top of that, The Missouri Law Enforcement Contraband Hit Rate among White Missourians has consistently stood 8% higher than Latinos; eventhough the search rate of Latinos has stood way higher than that of Whites! But you don't see people associating all Whites with guns and narcotics. Nor do you see them calling for Whites to be racially profiled. But thanks for trying buddy!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Have you seen who comes to the La Raza convention? People of every race. Almost every sports, music, movie, tv, and political celebrity in the country comes to the event. Thats a lot of money and spotlight to take away from this town who is trying to attract just that; money and spotlight! If you hate La Raza, then you better stop watching tv, going to movies or sporting events because its almost 100% sure that your favorite star is supporting them! It has to suck being the racist baby in the corner trying to ruin things for all of Kansas City!

    ReplyDelete

And on the straight political tip...why is an old lady on the freaking parks board worth any of this. In Funk had one class in political science he would have dumped this broad before it even go to this point.

  41. Congrats on your handling of Darla-J. Most cans of Foi-Gras would not have fared as well, nor taken it in the can as well as you did. I agree with NCLR. They should take their traveling medicine show to Wyandotte County, Independence, Grandview, or "God-forbid", Johnson County.

That way, when all those who have been affected by NCLR's unilateral decision to rescind their contract, can sue the "Choninos" off the organization and the dynamic duo that appears to run NCLR. The punitive damages portion might be highly educational.

As to public image, being seen as a podunk small city is not as bad as the knuckle dragging, arm-twisting, extorting impression the twinky organization of limmited political clout is trying to pull. Everyone with an axe to grind against the ancient Mexican organization will be lining up to do unto them as Congressman Craig is being done.

  42. Can anyone put aside the poisonous rhetoric and explain to me why Frances Semler is so much hated ... when her sins seem only to be 1) opposing illegal immigration, and 2) belonging to a group whose major theme is the same thing. Yes, yes, I realize that there is a disproportionate impact on the Hispanic community but primarily only to the extent of those in the country illegally and/or having friends and family who are, as well as the Mexican citizens who seek to enter the US without obeying the law ... Let's admit that. But what is wrong with standing up for the law of the land. And please don't give me this racial profiling argument or throw racism charges, the law of the land is worth supporting.

My questions are posed in good faith ... I seek a good faith response ... let's see what I get.

I doubt any mayors on that side of the line are going to tolerate that crap either.

  47. To in good faith,

I think its because like any group concerned with protecting the border, there are people who want immigration reform and then there are gun toting right-wing racists types which end up being the most vocal.

Advocacy groups like La Raza and the NAACP work within the law and use public pressure to get things done.

The minutemen (named after a milita) despite some well intentioned members, is by any definition a vigilante group.
And people affiliated with vigilante's probably shouldn't be appotined to government post

    ReplyDelete
  48. Response to d5h:

In good faith, I pleaded for the poisonous rhetoric to be put aside. As I understand it, the Minutemen on the border watch don't wear or carry firearms of any kind. Their only purpose is to alert the authorities when they observe what appears to be illegal entry. This is within the law and seeks to aid law enforcement. Please ... what's so bad about this ?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Frances Semler is a nice little old lady who pees and shits in her Depends and clips out recipes from "Women's World" (her new favorite casserole is called "Mexican Mess") and plants pretty flowers in her garden. She's opposed to illegal immigration because she once had a sexual fantasy that Pancho Villa and his entire posse made her drink a bottle of tequila and perform unspeakable sex acts on them. Every time she trembles with excitement at that forbidden fantasy, she rubs her Minuteman membership card until those naughty feelings go away.

    ReplyDelete

  51. Paintman:
    How someone as astutue in economic development can be so out of touch with this issue is beyond me. {Forget for a moment our positions on undocumented immigrants.}

Lets just look at this from an economic development point of view. Your intolerance will not just affect a 5,000,000 - 7,000,000 hit with La Raza. You can also forget about the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce coming to Kansas City any time soon (even with its President being from there). You can also forget about the National Society of Hispanic MBA's annual convention. This is leading you to a place you do not want to go, because you will fail miserably.

If you think that the pretty $250 Million dollar Sprint Arena, who incidently cannot attract a major sports franchise, is the answer, you are asking the wrong question.

Until then, I assure you that Santana, Shakira, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera and a slew of other performers will not schedule in your shiny new arena.

  55. Frances Semler works with several extreme right-wing organizations with ties to violence and the repression of basic human and civil rights for women, people of color, people of faith other than conservative evangelical protestant Christians, Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual and Transgendered people and union workers among others.

In addition to belonging to The Minutemen Civil Defense Corp.; a violently anti-immigration (not necessarily limited to the undocumented)vigilante group. The connection between The Minutemen and violent vigilante action is made on numerous news and public affairs Web sites -- so just an "anti-illegal immigration" group is an understatement.

In addition, Ms. Semler has been an activist for The Eagle Forum. The latter group was founded by beer heiress and right-wing activist Phyllis Schlafly, who as recently as last fall praised Ms. Semler's political activism.

Schlafly is an outspoken opponent of many issues including: sex education (unless its “abstinence only”), reproductive rights, AIDS education, sexual harassment legislation, federal support for daycare and family leave, United States involvement with the United Nations, the international Chemical Weapons Treaty, affirmative action, bilingual education, multiculturalism and diversity education, gay and lesbian rights, teaching the theory of evolution in schools, environmental protection efforts, the dangers of pornography (as defined by the group's leadership), and ALL immigration.

The Eagle Forum has organized against curricula and textbooks in public schools that violate the leaderships view of “Christian values” and Schlafly’s work is cited frequently by local schoolbook censors. Eagle Forum also campaigns heavily against the National Education Association and the American Teacher's Federation, claiming that both groups intentionally obstruct the ability of children to learn so that they can make a profit.

The Eagle Forum has expanded from a group that spent a decade campaigning against state ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to lobbying congress on a variety of issues, establishing leadership training seminars, and reaching out to college students to help develop future ultra-conservative political activists.

Why would civil rights groups want to spend money here when the mayor appoints a bigot to a position of authority and then is too stubborn to correct the error. Really Semler's connection to the Eagle Forum stands to cost this city a whole lot more than even the vigilante group. As this gets publicized all kinds of civil rights groups could decline to spend money in this town when they see the Eagle Forum connection -- they hate just about everyone and oppose just about everyone's citizenship rights.

By the way, where are you PROMO, Four Freedoms Democratic Club, Pride Democratic Club, Greater Kansas City Women's Political Caucus, Freedom Inc. and Labor? Cowardice does nothing for your membership. Even if your membership is not attacked by the Minutemen directly, (all though you should stand up for others rights) the Eagle Forum does target your members rights of citizenship. Time to speak up.

Tony, you should call out these groups on their silence in a separate post. It is time they make a decision, are they for Civil and Human Rights or are they just playing a game?

  67. Paintman, would you shop in a store where the manager calls you a worthless target for bullets? If did not shop at that store would your action be rightfully defined as "blackmail?"

    No way in Hell

  71. Its funny how Paintman and these other bigots preach everything that they hear on talk radio or Lou Dobbs. It is definitely the opponents of immigrants that are filled with people of hate, name calling, violence. They are the ones writing Latinos leaders and threatening their life. They are the ones that are on video calling calling not just Latinos, but Jewish, Arabs, Homosexuals, Females, and others every name in the book and vandalizing their businesses. They are the ones calling Latinos every name in the book; which now includes "The N Word" being brought back by bigot popular demand and directed towards Latinos. The opponents of immigrants, like Frances Semler, are the reason why active nativist hate groups have risen from big fat zero to more than 240. They are also the ones that are shooting at immigrants as shown on the internet and a few local blogs.

  72. Maybe these anti-immigrant "conservatives" should be more focused on their local republican stealing their wallet, peeping in their airport toilet, trying to hit on their young sons, running gay prostitute web rings, smoking meth while banging prostitutes, spending taxpayer paid salaries in whore houses or their anti-immigrant fundraising money going to neo-nazis instead of finding ways to attack immgrants putting money back into our economy. George Bush and The Governator even called these hate filled nativists what they are; "vigilantes".

  73. HEH, HEH, HEH, HEH...

    Is't it special!!!!

The poster that tries to argue that NCLR's threats of boycott are not "blackmail" is right. Given the circumstances, the correct term should be EXTORTION. But for a group so steeped in suppoert of illegal activities, such as the promotion of rewarding illegal aliens with green-cards, or promoting driving privileges for those here illegally, this crude protection racket is not such a long stretch. In Mexico, Unions are known to be registered and on strike before a business is able to open and their "charro" union bosses show up to pick up their piece of the pie. Come to think of it, Janet Murguia's NCLR is not so different from Elba Ester Gordilo's SNTE's (Latin America's largest Labor Union). The only real difference so far is that one has yet to actually use institutionalized violence. Give it time, this latest tryst, at the behest of El Centro and Guadalupe Center (Can Tony's Mommy's prints be found there?), as informed in today's KC Star's editorial, slides them down that slippery slope of political thuggery.

Maybe the city should boycott funding for Cinco de Mayo (not a Mexican holiday) or the day of the dead. God knows we don't celebrate Octoer 12, 1492 as "El dia de la Raza"...

By the way, The tens of billions of dollars sucked out of our economy by ilegal aliens sending illegal wages from stolen jobs in cash remittances to their accomplice homelands is not what I would define as "putting money back into our economy". If the Minutemen are vigilantes, maybe the illegals should be considered modern day corsairs. That would be private pirates with a foreign government sanction to ply their trade against an enemy for profit. For the 24 billion dollars received in emittances last year, Mexico certianly supports illegal immigration by their people into our country, as long as Mexico's version of ICE can continue deporting hundreds of thousands of illegal central americans from their country...

  75. These illegal immigrants that you fear so much are a huge part of reviving the Northeast area or at least making it more livable than it was 10 years ago.

I can get a fresh burrito on my block at 10p.m. and it's way better than the slop they're serving at taco bell.

And for the moment the crime isn't near as bad as it is on the East side.

So many of these anti-immigrant haters don't know anything at all about Kansas City.

Like Tony, they don't leave their basement.

  76. "Maybe the city should boycott funding for Cinco de Mayo (not a Mexican holiday) or the day of the dead. God knows we don't celebrate Octoer 12, 1492 as "El dia de la Raza"..."

    -------------------

Actually Anon 4:35pm we do celebrate "El dia de la Raza" just on a different day each year. Although we in the US celebrate it on the Second Monday in October, Its traditionally celebrated on October 12 to commemorate the day that Christopher Columbus arrived to the New World. Thus the name of the day we call "Columbus Day" you freaking moron! hahaa!

Just another example of the fact that the anti-immigrant movement going on in this country is lead by people with no knowledge of anything factual.
