A TKC netiquette question: When it is too cruel to present a Darwin Award?

Early this morning I'm watching the news and a story about a fatal car crash that was caused by some teen throwing water balloons is one of the top stories.

Right now I can't find the link and I'll definitely post it once I get a hold of it but the tragic tale is pretty simple . . . Some area teens are cruising around, throwing water balloons out of their car, somebody gets pissed and follows them . . . The end result is a car crash that kills a passenger in one of the cars.

Undoubtedly, it's a sad story but the fact that somebody died over a water balloon fight brings to mind the Darwin Awards - an honor bestowed on people who kill, or in rare cases sterilize themselves accidentally by attempting to do stupid feats or making careless mistakes.

But then again, dying over a water balloon fight seems too dumb and senseless to even parody . . . So I was wondering if there was any "good taste" criteria that might serve as a guide . . . I guess I should check the site . . .

Oops, and now I see that there is a "Self-selection" criteria that may be applicable if the dead teen in the tragic accident wasn't actually involved in the "fatal water balloon fight" (ouch, that's a horrible term) Anyway, here is one of the many Darwin Award requirements which are funny if it's not you or anybody you love who is "honored:

Self-Selection — Cause of one's own demise.

Killing a friend with a hand grenade would not be eligible, but killing oneself while manufacturing a homemade chimney-cleaning device from a grenade[5] would be eligible.
There is no award for killing someone else or causing someone else to be sterile.

Comments

  1. Darwin awards got lame in 2001 when everyone's office discovered them.

  2. Most important criteria as far as I'm concerned...is it funny? If it's really too tragic and pathetic you won't laugh.

  3. Darwin was a racist who thought the superior races would eliminate the savage races.

He also though women were intellectually inferior, and praised his cousin Francis Galton for his eugenics theories.
