Today's Star article reveals that Funkhouser sought out Minuteman lady Semler and SHE DIDN'T EVEN APPLY to the Parks Board but instead Funkhouser asked Semler to serve in a phone call made just days before he announced his picks, BYPASSING the application process.
As far as the Semler thing goes, I'm tired of writing about it but the more important aspect of this story is that Funkhouser is betraying his own propaganda by foregoing his token gestures of inclusiveness and doing things in much the same way that Kay Barnes did before him i.e. behind closed doors and without the benefit of much public involvement. Put simply, his big show of accepting online applications was merely another goofy PR move. Quotes from The Star story put it much better than I could:
“What’s the point of the process?” Councilman John Sharp asked. “If you’re just going to appoint your buddies and friends, that’s going back to the spoils system Kansas City was infamous for.”As of now, only the Mayor's die hard supporters who stand to benefit personally can claim that he hasn't fumbled through his first weeks in office. No matter what your view is on immigration, infrastructure, TIF reform or how much you sit up at night and talk about TKC before having awkward and frustrated sex with your wife - It's clear that the promise of reform now seems like only a memory and the silly notion that Funkhouser was going to fix every one of Kansas City's problems with a flick of a pen or a click of a mouse has now (thankfully) faded away.
“What’s the saying? ‘He who has the gold makes the rules,’ ” applicant Zeke Amador said.
Applicant Lynda Callon, who works on the West Side and who supported Funkhouser in the mayor’s race, was more critical.
“He’s truly myopic and incredibly naive in a lot of his appointments,” Callon said. “I guess it’s business as usual at City Hall.”
Wow. This is just dumbfounding. I bet my house that Gloria recommended these people and Mark went along with it.

ReplyDeleteThis is not an issue about race anymore. This is about the integrity of a process that Funkhouser said would be different. What makes Semler or Aiken less "privileged" than members of previous boards? Nothing. They were selected because of their association with the campaign.
Legal Hispanic can go on doing Funkhouser's bidding bashing COHO and everbody else, but the fact is that Funkhouser screwed up.
Who even knows what COHO even does, unless your affiliated with them, same goes for La Raza and The Guadalupe Center. Wheres the money going for the program hosted by these groups? I sure dont see them anywhere except being pissed off that none of their "intelligence" got picked to be on the board. Grow the hell up & learn, that bitching & complaining doesnt always get u everything you want, because sooner or later, nobodys going to give a dam about what u say, since all you seem to do is complain. And hey, lets remember this, the Mayor has barely been in the hot seat for 2 months, hes going to manage this city for 4 YEARS!!!!

So are you saying that if Funk skips the vaunted open application process 40% of the time, that is OK? I would have expected Kay Barnes to skip the rules 40% of the time, but Funk said he was going to be more open.
Maybe Funks new slogan should: "We only help cronies 40% of the time!".

So yah, he can hire who he wants, I guess we just need to overlook the fact that he lied and picked 40% of the positions by skipping the very process he campaigned on. Funk is a better politician than we give him credit for. Only two months into office and he has already learned how to lie and break promises.
I would have expected any of the other mayoral candidates to lie, but for some reason I was a sucker and thought Funk was different.

In reality, appointments have always been used for the mayor to appoint whomever he saw fit. Given the shallow and stagnant nature of the applicant pool, he may have looked outside and found an artist with an alternative lifestyle and a senior citizen with an alternative viewpoint. You bonerheads should be glad that the anti-Funk-Latino coalition scored even one set of buns on the board. Given Fierro's political affiliation in the election, I would have used some Mexican flavored fairness. "for friends, by the book with all the considerations; for others, By the book.
Funk's a bigger man than any of his detractors for staying above the fray of gnats like Rita, Lynda and ugly Bethy. Given the incestuous nature of the cross directories of the echo chamber illegal alien service organization, It is almost certain that they were counting on a seat on the board to propell some more budding Latinatti into positions of political prominence and clout where they could broker other deals. That "leap-frogging" tactic is the way they've always operated.
Well, I'll tell you who isn't running the city... The horde of special interest parasitic organizations like the CAN center which provides employment to illegal aliens in defiance of federal law while using a piece of federal land to help engage in such acts. If they wore "Chones", these broom riding harpies would have them caught in a bunch over Funk's steadiness.

Same for the abuses in Oaxaca. How about the release and acquital of military like Gral Acosta Chaparro for his part on human rights abuses including murder in the 1970's? How about marching in solidarity with the survivors and relatives of the victims of the massacre of Tlatelolco which remains impune?

Beside if you wanted to be factual then you would also tell people that you when are not busy bashing immigrants in papers or online, you are busy living it up in Overland Park taking their money for legal and translation services.
