I want to know when any of the council will say no to the Mayor. Yes, sir. Wouldn't it be wiser to have the downtown street car run for a year or two, and see how that works out. Do we really, 1 1/2 years BEFORE it's completion, vote on extending it? LORD, is anyone listening? The RUSH, the same rush they used in downtown to get a mere 314 write in votes by renters. These are not tax payers. Yet they vote and the
taxpayers pay.

The more I learn about the workings of Kansas City, MO, the more I am shocked that Hall is able to ram these projects down our throats and tell us to enjoy it. The grand fantasy that people will travel or move to a particular location purely for the pleasure of tootling around in a trolley has consistently failed to materialize. Because the urban circulator is not tailored to the needs of modern city dwellers who use mass transit to get around, there is no natural constituency to ride them. The result: Many communities get stuck with an eternal loop of empty, expensive white elephants.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-63731288337399906952014-02-19T19:05:04.539-06:002014-02-19T19:05:04.539-06:00If the first downtown TDD and Streetcar vote was a...If the first downtown TDD and Streetcar vote was a real election instead of a special mail in social media driven election it wouldn't have passed.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10849017.post-59747516751401437942014-02-19T18:59:34.219-06:002014-02-19T18:59:34.219-06:00Pootie Tang what kind of whores you going to have ...Pootie Tang what kind of whores you going to have up north? Based on the comments the pro-streetcar faction have been making, it seems they want to force the streetcar on people ("for their own good," I suppose) without regard to the consequences. The people who live in the affected areas, mainly Brookside and Waldo, are invited to move to a rural area if they don't like it, and no regard is given to those who will be hit with a special assessment of (I understand) 8.7% because they happen to live within a half mile of the route. I don't think special assessments are tax deductible, so the money involved here would be after-tax dollars.

These folks want to force their vision on people who've lived in these areas for decades. These neighborhoods were built with cars in mind. (You may have noticed some have shared driveways and garages, but almost all have driveways and garages.) Further, Brookside and Waldo are served by several bus routes including the two MAX lines.

The streetcar is the solution to a problem that simply does not exist, and the fact that the pro-folks are so immature and prickly in their posts certainly does not give me any confidence in either the streetcar proposal or those proposing it. Where would you suggest the Toy Train stop in the Northland? Perhaps the empty Metro North? How about one of the many Tattoo shops on North Oak? Wait, how about the soon to be closed NKC Hospital ? The Polar Bear jokes you elBryan. There is no room in a modern day KC for a Toy Train that voters obviously don't want. It's about including the entire city in a complex decision that will have a large impact on the way we attract business, residents, and tourists. Streetcar advocates would rather disenfranchise voters than sell their ideas to skeptics or make compromises with their vision. Many of us are open to the idea of being taxed to fund public transit improvements, but were never even asked if streetcar was the best or preferred way to "upgrade".Bryan M.
