TKC Question: Should Kansas City Keep Funding Broke-Ass Bicycle Advocates???

Most of these lanes don't garner much traffic and serve mostly as a nuisance to drivers trying to navigate neighborhood streets. Moreover, as the KCMO election approaches we've seen "cycling advocates" reveal themselves as nothing more than politically motivated locals candidates wanting to launch their careers by way of petty volunteerism at the expense of more pressing local priorities.

Here's slanted "service journalism" which assumes that bicycles are a viable form of transit and takes the word of middle-class "advocates" over the voices of people who live nearby. Read more:

Paseo Bikeway Would Improve Safety, But City Doesn't Have Funding To Finish Project

A bikeway along Paseo Boulevard would improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, but even with a federal grant, Kansas City is short on funds. The Public Works Department is considering two different designs for the bikeway, said spokeswoman Beth Breitenstein.

  1. It’s funny that they all of a sudden are painting bike lanes every where that go no where, they just painted bike lanes on Benton going north from clever blvd and they stopped after a block and a half. They’re bike lanes popping up everywhere that are just like this one, what’s the point if they’re miles apart and only a block and a half long?

  7. In the interest of safety all city streets should be changed over two lanes or less.

  8. I have sons that ride bikes and I always tell them to be careful. Idiots on the road don't watch for bikes or respect another persons right to safety.
I personally don't like the bike lanes but I want my grandchildren to have their fathers. Please be careful around bicyclists.

  9. Paseo ?! Last area elite whites want to ride their bikes. When the last time you saw an inner city youth on a bicycle ?

  10. Anyone riding a bike up and down Paseo, had better be in Seal Team 6 and loaded for bear.

Painted lines are the least of your worries.

  11. i do not understand the everywhere/nowhere logic of bike lanes either, except if they advertising vague intent. makes more sense if they make the I-70 and I-35 of bike paths before trying to convince some folks that riding on the shoulder of the road, trying to trust traffic to their back, is fun. Too bad useful public commons and recreational economies like the Katy trail require an environmental disaster for funding to establish. Katy trail is as much public infrastructure as I-70, should have been prioritized, funded, and invested as such, as should expansions of it that are as fastidious, determined, and domineering as highway continuity.
