TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KANSAS CITY MLK PETITION CONFRONTS FUNDING MECHANISM FAIL AMID HIGH COSTS OF CHANGING STREET SIGNS ON THE PASEO!!!

City Hall legalese has found a way to derail "the ministers" in their petition drive to change the name of The Paseo in order to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Remember that our blog community warned that "the devil is in the details" at the outset of the petition controversy when "The Revs" seemed overconfident about the power of KCMO citizen initiative petitions which are often gutted or rejected - Just ask transit activist Clay Chastain who has fought and lost one court battle after the next attempting to get a "clean" version of his ballot initiatives past Mayor & Council. Months ago we talked about the FUNDING MECHANISM problem for this ordinance that would require the assistance of a Council majority to overcome.

Here's the future of the discussion:

- The cost of replacing signs on The Paseo to honor MLK has been estimated at anywhere over $95-125K. Update: That doesn't even include yearly maintenance fees.

- Team Sly and the City manager's office note that petition ordinances don't allocate funds.

- Without a FUNDING MECHANISM an ordinance can be rejected by Mayor & Council.

And so . . .

TKC TOLD YOU SO!!! THE REVS CONFRONT CITY HALL OPPOSITION THREATENING TO QUASH EFFORTS TO HONOR MLK ON THE PASEO!!!

Meanwhile, public interest in the crusade has lapsed given that City Hall has been receptive to honoring the civil rights icon with a variety of alternatives.

Accordingly . . .

As time passes, the MLK name change on The Paseo gambit by the local SCLC and a coalition of Revs may have backfired now that their "petition power" has been weakened and the stubborn tactics of the faith community leaders rejected a broader community discussion led by Mayor Sly James. So, they'll have to get votes on the Council and/or fight in court to get their way. Moreover, during election season this concern represents just one of many special interest looking to secure support for their agenda.

  1. On this one, have to agree with Sly.

It's an effort to create a dividing line. The ministers know that most of their congregations are moving out to Lee's Summit and Raytown and so they want to stake out more territory.

That's sad because they could have done it by helping to build businesses instead they are just playing political games that are unproductive.

  4. Does nor fit Slie's agenda so team Slie found a way to kill the initiative.

  5. It appears that the fat fake Revs have lost interest. They have all gone back to seeing how much money they can grift from people with white guilt and stuffing their fat faces with as much fried chicken and watermelon as they can.

  6. It’s called field puddin not watermelon! LOL!

  7. The darkies already cost our society enough. What with their reliance on public assistance, cost of prosecuting and incarcerating them, raising the kids from multiple baby daddies and the animalistic black on black crime. The black church community should try to change their culture from within. The darkies will never listen to the whites. I am not racist, but the shit the darkies make me put up with makes feel like it. The Racism Industry needs to be dismantled. The last thing you should be concerned about is costing our society even more with this ridiculous trademark payment to the King Family.

  8. MLKreek

Rename Brush Creek to MLKreek, no royalties to greedy King family using the suggested verbage. Everyone is happy this stupid idea is put to rest.

  9. Everyone that wants to change Paseo Blvd. That lives on Paseo can start by placing a MLK Blvd sign in their front yard.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Then the King family can visit each house with a MLK sign and collect their royalty.

  14. There is no reason that The Paseo shouldn't be named after Dr. King. I see a lot of racism and hate in the comments but not much sense or good reason to object this plan. I bet a lot of people who oppose it don't even live on the Paseo or near it. I do and I support the name change.

    2. Ditto 4:30. That’s a dem and darkey philosophy; they’re all for anything as long as someone else is picking up the tab.

  15. I think some of the ministers have moved over to support the 63 street plan. that is better than the airport or the paseo idea. Not everybody who opposes either of those suggestions is racist, we just have different ideas about how the designation should be decided.

  16. Why does it need to be a street? A park should be a better way to honor MLK because then people could celebrate events there. A street does no good for any community.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't think MLK would want a street or airport named after him because people today have largely forgotten what he stood for. We seldom see non violence at events like Ferguson and others. This is pure feel good symbolism. Lewis Doobad at the Star would love this.

  18. I object to paying the King family a yearly royalty, that is bull shit.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The fat fake revs just want to get their fat greedy hands on white peoples money.

    ReplyDelete
  20. C'mon...using the idiotic excuse regarding the cost of replacing and maintaining signs as a reason not to change the name of the Paseo is absurd.

You can drive anywhere in this two-bit burg and see street signs in piss-poor shape. That is if they are even there any more.

  24. Let’s rename that new grocery store that the homies are robbing blind!

  25. As 9:14 says, Landing grocery store could be MLK Memorial Grocery.

(Because in two years, it will also be but just a memory after the black hole of hood shrinks it away.)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why not rename VINE street?? Its much shorter, less costly & the city is trying to promote the (black) area.

  27. There being politically correct. They will find something to satisfy these minister's, They, know these older,Ministers, want to keep the Legend going, and then they will Go on to more pressing issues. Didn't Tony run a few stories on corrupt ministers at one time.

  29. Why not rename KCMO to (Martin Luther) King City? The city could still be KCMO without confusing visitors who think they are in Kansas.
