TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! AMID TOY TRAIN EXTENSION DEBATE KANSAS CITY STREETCAR RIDERSHIP DECLINES FOR SECOND MONTH IN A ROW!!! STATS REVEAL 10K FEWER PASSENGERS!!!

Once again, by their own count, riders are losing interest in the struggling Kansas City streetcar.

To wit . . .

FOR THE SECOND MONTH IN A ROW THE TOY TRAIN SUFFERS ANOTHER DECLINE IN RIDERSHIP!!!

Remember that last month the 20% April 2017 vs. April 2018 ridership decline was a precipitous disaster that evoked tough questions about the viability of the smallish rail line as a means of transit.

To be fair, this month it's a little bit better . . .

Remember last year in May the streetcar was just starting to build momentum and racked up some impressive stats . . .

However, this year, with excellent weather, backed up by Downtown events and amid a growing list of social activities inside the loop. The numbers weren't quite as noteworthy.

KC STREETCAR REPORTS 11,105 FEWER RIDERS LAST MONTH VS. ONE YEAR AGO AT THIS TIME DESPITE A DESPERATE PUSH TO EXPAND THE LINE!!!

That's a significant decline of 5.28% and, even worse, a continued downward trend in ridership for two months in a row.

Accordingly, as City Hall patiently waits for election returns & federal funding . . . It's clear that the novelty of the so-called starter line is already wearing off and local residents are quickly losing interest whilst supporters DEMAND HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS to bolster their fading numbers and "momentum" that is not longer apparent.

Developing . . .

Comments

  1. Without federal funding, the point is moot and so far the Trump administration has soured on streetcar money. That's the bigger point here, we can vote locally all we want but if it's not fully funded than it's all just for show like so much of the downtown hype.

    1. The only bright spot is that we don't have any more of those stupid stories about singing about the streetcar. That was the worst trend ever and actually inspired me to buy some of those silly looking airpods.

  2. TKC, I'd like to remind you that there is no straight line to success. Ridership is an important element but your post should also mention that TOTAL ridership is approaching 3 million and we've seen an influx but new business, residents and jobs into the downtown area because of the streetcar - That is also a sign of the momentum that can be traced directly to the streetcar. If anything, what your post suggests is that extending the route will bring more excitement and riders.

  6. Go4KC is hilarious...There have been new buildings but no new business in downtown, residents have bailed out of downtown due to crime and parking!

If we have 25 million tourists as per Sly James wouldn't approaching 3 million riders be a little low?

Check the Plaza they have lost more business and stores in the term of Sly and the gang than ever in the history of it's beginning!

    Get a clue Go4KC you're delusional?

    1. I would like to talk about these ad hominem attacks. It's not my job that we're talking about it's hundreds and thousands of jobs that Kansas City is creating. The streetcar is helping that process there is simply no denying it downtown has been transformed and what we are seeing is incredible growth brought forth by the streetcar. I don't know why readers of this blog would rather have surface parking lots then build a transportation Network that all of Kansas City can enjoy. Ridership is just one concern we need to think about the big picture when we talk about momentum to make our city best. This is much more important than just blog mean blog comments!

A: YOU WAKE UP FROM YOUR NIGHTMARE!

  15. The Toy Train was a bad idea, so bad that KC had to do some slick and shady things to get it funded. They used hook and by crook methods now we are stuck with this sad waste of tax payer money.

I've never heard one person say let's go downtown to ride the streetcar. Nope.

"hundreds and thousands of jobs that Kansas City is creating"
    Where and what are they.
Toy train has really disrupted travel for the non downtown living people and bicycle riders and not to mention how it has disrupted the streets. They are in drastic need of repair as well as much more infrastructure.
Why isn't Team Slie discussing repairing the infrastructure?

  20. Hmmm; a whole 2 months of decline in ridership.....this sounds vaguely like the climate denier argument - hey, it's cold in January, so climate change is completely false...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Progress in KCMO that Go4KC inadequately pushes is the cookie vendor discrimination in the river market. The city will not allow the cookie monster to have his job which is one the city does not have to create.

You are forgetting one big issue, Chris--all of downtown's "progress" is taxpayer funded. Taxpayer funding may be justified to get an area moving, but once it's moving, taxpayers need to get out of the way and let the market decide what the area needs. And despite all the progress you allege HAS happened, you can't even give an ESTIMATE of when downtown will be self sufficient, which it never will be if taxpayer money is always going to be available to developers, streetcar constructors, and other grifters.

  23. When are the tourist going to start paying for only free trolley ride in US. When streetcar folks have to start accounting for the fares, safe bet those ridership numbers we will only be a fraction of what is claimed now.

  25. Go4KC is a liar

  26. Think ridership is decreasing, just wait until they inevitably have to start charging for rides. It's free right now but they are going to add fares. Most don't think about this

    1. They may never charge for it. Think about that suckers.

  27. Maybe a train inside Oakpark and Independence mall would help them increase shoppers. After all the train is just a tourist shopper conveniance not real mass transit.

  28. I have seen one benefit that primarily resulted from the growth in the number of people living Downtown... North Kansas City is BOOMING!
The Downtown residents have discovered that here is a vibrant nightlife just minutes away, with low crime, constant growth and free parking!

And there are some indications that a small but steady stream of 'refugees' from the "Downtown Experience" are moving into the Northland as well. It's getting almost impossible to find a place to live in NKC, and young singles and couples are migrating into the inner ring suburbs, buying the cheap houses, having them fixed up, and living on roughly three fourths of the cost they were experiencing Downtown.

So keep it up City Hall, the benefits your obsession with Downtown are providing to the Northland are wonderful!

  30. Hey Go4KC: I live 5 blocks from the proposed Street Car route which will possibly be going to the Plaza. I just can't figure out why I will have to pay a $1,200 per year Property Tax increase if this vote passes and the Street car is funded. At the same time The Street Car does not charge anything for a ride. Why would you support a Tax plan which will effect a very small number of residential sites?
My home value will also be effected adversely with this tax increase.

    ReplyDelete
  31. We have the streetcar. We have downtown growth. Therefore, the streetcar must be the cause of the downtown growth.

Is that pretty much your logic? Or do you have facts and arguments that prove a causal connection between streetcar and growth?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Tell you what I'll do. You have some outside concern uninvolved with the streetcar or the city in any way audit the ridership and I'll accept the results... even if they're good.

  35. So Go4KC , the Mayor and City Council along with the Street Car Authority all think the street car is such a huge success. And by all rights they should act that way as they are being paid to try and sell you this white elephant. The only ones who it’s a huge success for is those earning over 70k a year working for it. This is a financial nightmare for the tax payers that will only continue to get worse.

You can’t trust any numbers release by the city because we all know they will lie and twist the truth related to any accurate figures.
Do any of you understand that you as a tax payer pony up over $3.30 every time someone rides that damn thing? Look at how much you paid out of pocket for nonresidents to all come down and got a free ride on the Kansas City Money Pit.

So in all reality if a charge of $3.50 was collected per rider it might break even. Now who in their right mind is going to pay that to ride the White Elephant Choo Choo?

I got this figure for operational costs per rider off of SCA released information and so called rider numbers being given out. But what has been proven way to often you can’t trust anything the city puts out when it comes to counts and costs. So the actual cost per rider could indeed be higher than what I state here.

    ReplyDelete

  42. There are some good arguments supporting the streetcar, yet it will create jobs but I think it's fair to talk about the long them because it looks like the appeal is definitely slipping.

Also, it's obvious that pro-streetcar voices are outmatched when they speak in a forum they don't control.

  43. So what was the result of the vote. Went thru the rigamarole and haven't heard nothing. When do they announce?

  45. Last time I rode the TT, I was sitting there thinking how the damn thing stunk like piss. Then about three seats in front of me a drunk was pissing in a paper bag and it was running down under the seats.

I won't be supporting anything Toy Train. That thing sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  46. What kind of jobs has the toy train brought? Aren't Cerner, Sprint, Amazon, etc out in the burbs? Did City Hall employees sell their homes east of Troost and bought lofts in the Crossroads so they could ride the streetcar to work? Who actually works downtown and lives near the streetcar? Maybe a few ad agency hipsters, but not thousands.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Don't worry. Ridership will rise sharply when cold weather returns and the street people need place to crash, out of the weather. Please disinfect the train and spray Fa breeze to eliminate the urine smell before Winter.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The train is awesome!
Someday I will show my support by taking a ride on it and perhaps order a cup of coffee and split it with a hobo on the train.
Using the same logic as city hall- this will create 126 new jobs!
I would like to see a new path that goes straight to no where. We could maybe ride it and that would attract millions of new visitors.
Is 2 light full? All the subsidies.. hope the rich can somehow get by. Maybe they can build 4 light in Waldo and give tax breaks to single moms! 5 light and 69 Light can be built by Janet Reno’s house and give n free rent to aliens. The nightmare is when Old Janet is caught in negligee with Eric Greitens.
