TKC BREAKING NEWS SUNDAY SPECIAL!!! KANSAS CITY STREETCAR CHEERLEADER MATT STAUB LAUNCHES 4TH IN-DISTRICT CITY COUNCIL CAMPAIGN!!!

A leading local rail transit advocate embarks upon on a collision course with the strongest critics of the toy train as Kansas City council contests ramp up.

To wit . . .

FIRST ON TKC!!! KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR ADVOCATE MATT STAUB IS RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL IN THE 4TH DISTRICT!!!

The Missouri Ethics Commission reveals that he registered his campaign this June.

For quite some time this blog clowned "Staubio" and his advocacy if only because he seemed far too passionate about the potential for a smallish line to "transform" all of Kansas City.

However, we met him a couple of years ago and he's actually a nice enough guy who even answered a few TKC questions.

Nevertheless . . .

DON'T EXPECT TAX FIGHTERS AND FIERCE STREETCAR CRITICS TO BE FORGIVING AS HIS CANDIDACY IS A VERY REAL REFERENDUM ON TOY TRAIN EXPANSION!!!

To be fair, if he wins . . . The toy train would have one of its staunchest proponents on the Council.

A few things to consider:

- Now it's personal. Public niceties aside, Mr. Staub has engaged in fierce social media battles with critics. He gives up even more rights to privacy as a political contender and already longtime enemies have targeted him with attacks on his public record and personal life.

- The sordid topic of coin will come into play - There have always been valid questions regarding streetcar supporters earning consulting cash connected to their advocacy . . . As a political candidate, opponents plan to exploit this longstanding controversy.

- The 4th District is much bigger than the streetcar line - Crime, homelessness, gentrification and small business conflicts with City Hall are all top issues among residents of embattled neighborhoods . . . The streetcar isn't the panacea to so many Midtown problems and the 4th District might see Mr. Staub as a one-issue candidate who doesn't understand the community outside of the smallish Main Street rail line.

Still, there's hope here . . . With his candidacy, Matt Staub has now opened himself to questions that most streetcar advocates actively avoid.

As the silly season progresses, locals can look forward to answers regarding streetcar criticism that have been downplayed by way of millions upon millions of dollars worth of taxpayer subsidized propaganda.

  1. The upside is big for the chamber here with this candidate, he's sure to get a lot of money flooding into this race.

His biggest problem is if Jolie backs down and retreats back to the 4th because of more serious candidates.

    2. He's got a shot but agree that he doesn't have a lot of experience talking to people who aren't also supporters of the streetcar.

  3. ^^^ that’s funny!

  4. Go4KC now has a streetcar ally. Staubio needs to state his stance on fixing the failed KCMO infrastructure that team Slie fails to fix. Also needs to state his support of the KCMO water department.

  5. "Closest thing the streetcar has come to a citywide election so far."

Not true. The streetcar was put to a city-wide vote and failed 70-30 which led to the rigged vote that ensured it would be passed.

  6. ^^Perfect example of people being oppressed by the government.

  7. I appreciate that my comments are resonating with some readers of this blog so I feel that I need to answer some of the concerns here. Matt Stuab is one of the best advocates for Transit that Kansas City has ever seen. He has changed the landscape of our city for the better and the work that he has done will Propel Kansas City for generations to come. Advocates like Staub really have changed the way politics business and transportation work in our city. He not only deserves serious consideration from voters but his candidacy also indicates that this changes the street car is making to KC MO have really made an impact and people want more of the same from their Council. We deserve Representatives who care about Transit likes table and who have done the serious groundwork that he has. I think TKC I was trying to be fair but he failed because the comments here are so negative towards streetcar progress that has proved successful so far. I think it would have been better to wait for style ribs initial campaign press release then to spoil what should be one of the best hopes the city council has seen in at least 30 years. The reality is that stop will likely get elected in the streetcar will move forward past UMKC and make even more progress.

    1. If you like him as a candidate, he must be corrupt and dishonest. Thanks for the warning.

  9. He's a member of KC's Fudgsicle Gang.

  10. There are two things that, if a candidate supports them, should automatically disqualify their candidacy: genocide and the streetcar.

  15. My favorite line of his was property values are going up downtown,(because of the toy train of course) when in fact his and many others property taxes were going down.

Guess who got shafted to pick up the deficit?

  16. Look forward to peeling his bullshit apart. He can block everyone on social media with a click but not in a public forum.

  17. Unlike most of the commenters here, I don't think Staub is a bad guy. It's just his politics that are lousy. The streetcar has looted the 3rd district and I think he needs to address that fact.

  18. Jolie runs, Jolie wins.

She might have to go back to the district but she will win hands down.

  19. @ 5:33, she won't win if they count the votes in the Northland.
The "Orphans of the North" are one in five of her constituents, but she has NEVER set foot at a Community Meeting north of the River!

She may think she doesn't need them but they represent a solid block of 4000+ votes for any opponent she faces. She has no idea how much she is despised in the North, and it has nothing to do with her gender or personal orientation, it is a result of the total contempt and disregard she displays daily.

  20. The street is the biggest waste of money this city has ever seen to date. Once they start charging to ride the train it will be dead in the water!

  21. Go4kc- “We deserve Representatives who care about the rest of the city”

    Nothing like dividing a city.

    Downtown sucks and always will.

  22. If the Streetcar is so great, why did taxpayers have to give Cordish $17 Million for a parking garage on property adjacent to the Streetcar??? Answer that stupid Staubio!!! If we elect this clown shame on all KC voters.

  23. He looks gay to me.
