The Asterisk in Streetcar Reporting

Bill Turque over at The Kansas City Star wrote the standard piece on this week's streetcar extension vote, and gave some attention to the uncertainty of necessary federal funds, Taxes will not be collected until construction is ready to begin. But the tax funds will not come close to covering the cost of building the new line.

  1. Dead? Hope so. In its tracks? Hope it actually ends up in Sly’s front yard, if he ever has one. If not, it will fit fine up his fat lard ass.

  2. This will ruin Go4KC's moving KCMO forward propaganda and making KCMO a better place.

  3. Lets hope that Thump grinds an axe and kills the toy train once and for all.

  4. I hope there will be no federal funding for K.C. in anything this city does after the way James and Cleaver have been acting. I will write to the President myself if I have just to show how dirty those two have been.

    Suck it up Go4KC

  5. There probably won't be any federal money for this joke, so it's unlikely the extension will ever take place.
But that doesn't mean the usual menagerie of grifting "consultants", planners, pr flacks, and usual hangers-on won't find places at the taxpayer table to chow down on their no-bid contracts and insider deals.
Just like with the original streetcar planning, there's plenty of city money that will come from "unencumbered balances" in accounts throughout the budget, as well as PIAC funds, planning accounts, excesses in water service accounts, and anywhere else that's needed.
It's amazing how effective little groups of special interests can be in stampeding Sly and the gang into millions in expenditures and even more debt to pay for their dreams.
It's really too bad KCMO doesn't actually have a city government.

  7. Some of the readers stated this a number of months ago. The Federal money is not going to be there for decades. The federal government is Broke. Amtrak in Missouri will get Funding not a Toy,fu,fu,Train For Tourists.

  8. I bet Go 4 KC has his nuts on ice because this news had to kick him in the balls. In equally important news, Ken and Barbie were denied permits to add on to their Malibu dream house.

  9. Seriously, cut some losses now, and maybe lessen ridicule by repurposing these tin toys. Attach bus tires and outfit the interiors to make them into beer wagons and food trucks. Sell chunks of the tracks in souvenir shops, or to metal recyclers. The 24+ million tourists and loyal residents will welcome added cuisine choices.

  10. If KC was serious that train would be running down the center of I29 from the airport and I70 fron Indepedance and I35 from Olathe into downtown. Not making circles in snowflake land.

  11. I would like to see Sly beg for some money from the Feds. Maybe his buddy Cleaver can help...oops, that won’t work. A lot of money down the drain.

  12. The article gives the impression that federal funding isn't there, which is too bad. Don't get me wrong, I've been against the streetcar from the beginning but I also believe that if you're going to do something stupid you should go all the way in with your stupid or else you're worse off.

The original funding was a mistake and the streetcar never should have existed in the first place, but now that it does it may as well have some utility and service the city because a mile route between the river market and union station is basically useless and has not use.

Reminds me of the sports complex election back in 2006 where there was the issue of stadium renovation AND the rolling roof. Both options were stupid, but we went half-assed and only voted for one when we should have just gone all in on stupid and voted for both
