Steve Rose Seyz Perfect Village McMansion Overbuilding Is All Good

With what might be a few dated notions about what's happening in the urban core right now (gentrification and rampant taxpayer subsidy) this Golden Ghetto pundit is pleased with rising wealth disparity in his part of town. Take a look:

'Monster homes' in Prairie Village are a good problem to have

If you need proof that we live in two Americas, consider what's going on right here in the Kansas City metropolitan area. In the inner city, there is angst about deteriorating and abandoned property.

  1. As long as we don’t get any diversity they can keep building. We don’t need diversity.

  2. No surprise here. Ostentation is a hallmark of Rose’s type.

  4. for once, i think he's right. well-ordered change and evolution in a solid neighborhood is good.

prairie village is a great place, actually owing more to its community feeling and schools than its houses.

  5. No one should be allowed to build high enough to put a neighboring home in permanent shade.

  6. We have experienced the same situation in north Leawood for several years. What is now a little 1950's house built on what is considered a big lot today is being replaced and sells for around $1 million. That is quite a disparity with the original houses, which sell in the $300K to $400K range. Real estate agents are knocking on doors in the neighborhood to make offers for the existing homes, which will not be resold but torn down. It is a healthy sign, but the rising values and appraisals are beginning to pinch some of us older folks because taxes and homeowner's insurance amounts are rising very rapidly. Most of the new homeowners are dual income professional couples with young families. Real estate agents tell me that the days of young couples buying "fixer uppers" no longer exist. Everything needs to be new, fresh, modern, and perfect. But I have noticed that all the woodwork and cabinetry is painted and the "hardwood" floors are fake. There are no more marble entryways, fireplaces, or kitchen desks. Instead, there are charging stations, theater rooms, and showers that hold 6 people. Even the kid's bedrooms have private baths and walk in closets that are as big as some of the third bedrooms used to be. Three car garages are not enough. There are still cars parked in the driveway. Only in America do we park our $50K cars outside so that we can store our junk in the garage. I guess that will never end.

  7. Yeah, who wants unique homes with character and history when we can have a bunch of ugly, giant cookie cutter monstrosities like the rest of JoCo? While you're at it, you might as well add a lot of convenience stores and fast food joints then you can be just like Mission.
