Steve Rose Contemplates Johnson County Golden Ghetto Life Without Sprint Jobs

The answer to this newsie question is: They're gonna get laid off.

If T-Mobile merger is approved, what will become of 6,000 Sprint employees?

"The future of the current 6,000 Sprint employees in Overland Park is up in the air. As the Sprint official told me, some employees will be vital to keep in Overland Park. Some employees are performing duplicate jobs already covered in Seattle and thus would find their positions eliminated. And some will be given the opportunity to relocate to Seattle. Those decisions will be made later by T-Mobile."

This is a bright side column from an optimistic scribe.

By contrast . . .

TKC reality check: Most of them will get the ax.

Also, the T-mobile presence here might just be confined to more mall kiosks i.e. it'll never come close to Sprint glory days.

Developing . . .

  1. The Sprint campus is great opportunity for diversity. Section 8 housing with excellent parking and easy access to rich white neighborhoods to harvest from. The MLK housing project.

  4. This could affect the shortage of nicer homes in Johnson County in the real estate market.

Because many of those 6000 employees live nearby, and may lose their houses without those well-paid jobs.

We've been in a very tight seller's market for two years--this could change overnight.

Gonna be a whole lotta folks ordering VistaPrint calling cards: Consultant.

  5. By "nicer homes" I assume you mean $100 - $125 thousand dollar houses priced at $250,000 - $300,000?

    Isn't a "T-Mobile/Sprint Merger" something analogous to a "Mountain Lion/Rabbit" merger?

  7. Good God Tracy, you really believe some of the crap you say?

  8. @1:57 - I actually laughed when I read Tracy's post. I hope you open a dictionary and start to understand the term Sarcasm because Tracy's comment was great. It's all about the last line.

  9. Most, if not all, of the people currently working on the main Sprint campus will be gone. Sadly, the KC job market is not vibrant enough to absorb all of them. Those who do get another job here will almost surely make significantly less money. It's not good.

  10. Sprint stock was $70 in 2000. Now $5.00 and thats what pension plans based on. Many at sprint won't ever be able to retire
