Kansas lawmakers pass bill to compensate wrongfully convicted

KANSAS CITY - Wrongfully convicted and imprisoned Kansans could get compensation for spending years behind bars for crimes they did not commit. On Thursday, the Kansas Legislature sent a bill to the governor that would make those wrongly imprisoned eligible to receive $65,000 for each year they served.

  1. People that are victims of crime should be compensated by the federal government for not protecting them

  2. ^^^^^ That's a stupid line of thought 2:51. If the state is wrong then the state needs to pay. But I agree they should receive something but only if proven innocent beyond all doubt and not just questionable doubt. So easy years later to no longer have a witness or some evidence and new evidence I have always question due to chain of who had and messed with the newly found so called evidence. DNA proof is one thing as that is pretty cut and dry for the most part.

  3. I agree with 2:51 we pay taxes to be protected.

  4. Agreed, 2:57. If the conviction was the result of bad acts by the prosecutor, police or investigator, the state should be held responsible, but only after a civil trial in which the convicted person must prove it. If the state's employees did not cause the wrongful conviction, the state should not be liable.

State employees who knowingly caused a wrongul conviction should be subject to criminal penalties. That will not happen in McIntyre's case. Only the taxpayers will be punished.

  6. First minor offense probation . Second minor offense life without parole. First felony offense death penalty

  7. At $65000 per year I can see all of the abuse of such law coming. The defense lawyers are chomping at the bit to get clients signed up and probably offering fee retainers for anybody that wants one.
