Exploring Frank Lloyd Wright's Naturalistic Legacy

Our area certainly has some distinctive architecture, including the art deco Power & Light Building in downtown Kansas City and the massive new Church of the Resurrection sanctuary in Leawood, Kansas. Before those bricks were laid, one of the world's most famous architects left his mark on Kansas City.

  1. The story fails to mention an important fact: when the church board and building committee modified the design, by refusing to build it with all the features he specified, Wright took his name off of the design.

A bit reminiscent of the so-called "hair curlers" atop Bartle Hall. Only there, the artist exceeded the design, with one more elaborate sculpture. And requested they increase the contract to accommodate the better work. They refused. So, we have 3 vanillas and 1 chocolate!

  2. And it fails to mention another fact - his ego was so inflated that he wouldn't use "ordinary" things like off-the-shelf faucets and light switches, so every time one of the crappy oddities he designed wore out, replacing it became a major undertaking.

  3. At least the designs are interesting. Today's subdivisions are filled with block after block of the same style house. You can't tell one developer from another. They all use the same designs. Yawn....
