Crowds were noticeably smaller in Westport this weekend despite warmer weather and a myriad of increased security. Critics claim the leaders of the entertainment district miscalculated public reaction to intrusive security measures that blocked off streets and subjected patrons to obtrusive gun checks.

HAS THE WESTPORT PRIVATE STREET SECURITY PLAN BACKFIRED?!?!
Amid concerns about racial profiling, the negative reaction to the new checks is mostly coming to our blog community via service industry workers lamenting a reduction in their income blamed on private streets.
Here are a couple of money quotes from friends of the blog . . .
"Westport was dead this weekend. People looked at the blockades and just decided to go somewhere else. It's not worth the hassle to most people who are already really lazy and think they're doing us a favor by paying for parking. My review after the first week: It's going to cost more money than it's worth."

"Yes, the crowds were lighter but if it saves one person's life it's all worth it. Westport has survived worse than this and maybe the kind of people who will eventually brave the street closures and metal detectors are those who really just want to feel safe and come to our neighborhood in the right state of mind. I think we need more time to see if it has worked or not. Some of my coworkers complained that their tips were down nearly 50% but I'm thinking business will pick up in the Summer."
