TKC Saturday Night Playlist: Bad Week For Brookside Doesn't Bode Well For Kansas City

A high-profile homicide and news of an impending Starbucks has the denizens of Brookside in a panic. Also, there's a vicious owl that continues to stalk the neighborhood.

For those who aren't familiar with this enclave, it's basically one of the last remaining middle-class hangouts in Kansas City that's not completely focused on serving hipsters. Translation: Brookside is still a place in KCMO where people still aspire to raise their families. Years of higher property taxes, rising crime and infrastructure neglect have taken their toll on the community before this week of horrible news which now seems to put the community on the precipice of disaster.

Downtown caters to movers & shakers, the creative class and tech pioneers; The Northland is built upon highly leveraged mortgages and seemingly wants to emulate every bedroom community in the nation; Cerner isn't going to save the Southland . . . But Brookside has always been a somewhat hidden residential paradise in proximity to the urban core but still hidden from its dangers - Sadly, the tragic events of this week at the front door of so many otherwise naive residents remind us that Kansas City can no longer continue to ignore the clear and present danger of fast food, gun blasts and birds of prey.

As Brookside goes, so goes Kansas City.

Corporate encroachment and the brutal killing of young professionals have taken down far nicer places . . . Just ask the residents of Hyde Park. But the downfall of Brookside is basically a testament to the ongoing decline of the American Middle-Class in the midst of exceptionally divisive partisan politics and rising violent crime.

And so, we dedicate tonight's playlist to Brookside and their continued struggle for middle-class good life in Kansas City proper.

As always, thanks for reading and have a safe and fun Saturday night.

    1. No 1:01 he's suggesting a murder is the same as a coffee place opening.

Which, of course, is fucking stupid.

  15. brookside, u can not shoot ppl trying to rob your house or else u will have to pay 5.75 million dollars. Oh the tragic irony.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The whole brookside thing is awful and not surprising. Most contingency fees are between 33 and 40%, the 5.75 million was excessive and he really pissed off a man who had already shown he takes his personal property very seriously, as do many folks.

  17. Is Kansas city going to build more homeless shelters now? Let's be holistic about this incident.

    ReplyDelete
  18. noooo, we do not create homeless shelters and opportunity, we prefer to create the opportunities found in jails and prisons.
