Toy Train Streetcar Déjà Vu Scam Explained

This week, voters throughout Kansas City told our elected leaders that the future of the streetcar should be decided by the entire populace in an open, Democratic process and not by just a few voters carefully selected by development lawyers.

Cynically, paid Toy train supporters are threatening to defy the election and continue with their plans.

In this video from VOX . . . The progressive news outlet offers a balanced and reasonable analysis of streetcar efforts throughout the U.S. and their conclusion is that the toy train trend across the U.S. is not about transit, it's mostly about economic development.

Given the preponderance of TIF, subsidy and free publicity along Kansas City's streetcar line . . . This phenomena is even more pronounced and admitted by some of the more honest streetcar supporters. And so, if the streetcar is about economic development and not public transportation . . . Then cheerleaders for this streetcar extension are touting the interests of developers over the will of the voting public.

Check the clip . . .

Economic development only increases city wide if there is an increase in economic activity city wide. The streetcar cannot cause an increase city wide, it can only move activity from areas away from the line into areas near the line. So some areas decline because of the streetcar.

Even claims of economic development near the line are questionable since they are usually accompanied by TIFs and other incentives. But it cannot be questioned that any increase in taxes has a negative impact on economic development unless the increase results in tangible benefits to residents and businesses. On that point the streetcar fails miserably.

"And you and the streetcar crowd have yet to explain why it's a good idea to duplicate a service that already exists--the MAX, which costs $1.50 to ride unless you qualify for a discounted fare, which can be as low as 75 cents. Whenever this question comes up we hear... crickets."

Still crickets.

For all the money they're pumping into this toy train we could have one hell of a bus system with state of the art equipment.

When you start your comments with an expletive ALL IN CAPS and then you mention, libtards, snowflakes, Democrats, Hillary, Obama, or you the word F-ck more than once, you are verbally masturbating. Readers automatically skip over your comments and move on.

1:28, sorry, what was that again? I skipped over your comments and moved on. Try all caps.

Obsolete fixed rail systems do not serve the needs of our community. The future is shared ride systems.

The starter line serves only as a tourist attraction. Their ridership numbers demonstrate this. I guess the question remains – why aren’t the tourist paying for it rather than the citizens of KCMO?

If bus fare is $1.75, I think the novelty of the trolley would support a $3 fare. Can City Hall implement this on their own or do we have to have another petition drive to get it on a ballot? Sly needs to start responding to the will of the people.

The Folly Trolley should not be charging less than a dollar per person.

Oh wait, they can't do that because then there would be proof as to how many really are riding it.

Long as there is no proof Sly and the Lying gang can makeup what ever numbers they want.

10:14, that wasn't me. I'm not the only Democrat in the country.

I've been ignoring your trolling because this "free speech zone" doesn't apply to me.

You try to make the thread about me, & Tony says I'm making the thread about me.

Super Dave - spot on! Charging any fee would finally show us the inflated numbers that the city has been using for the last year. "6,000 riders daily". Who are these 6,000 people? Yeah right, on a two-mile route where few take the streetcar to get from their homes to work or have the money from their city hall or bank teller jobs to ride a streetcar to lunch at downtown restaurants every day.

Super Dave – thanks for the insight. I always thought it was strange that KCMO had the only free trolley in the US. Now I understand why they don’t. If they charged for the ride, the accounting stats would totally deflate their outlandish ridership claims.

It's significant to note that while #kcstreetcar fanboys have been claiming that the TDD funds the streetcar so we shouldn't need a citywide vote to let them spend their own money, this story by Lynn Horsely clearly states that the extensions can't move forward without city participation. In other words, city resources funded with our tax dollars that everyone in KC should have the opportunity to vote for or against.

^^^^^Additionally, the added and regressive sales tax will affect everyone who shops in the area, and the loss of a lane and parking on Main will make it inconvenient for everyone who uses that route.

And there's always the issue of duplicating an existing service (the MAX).

This is a stupid idea on many levels.
