Craig Glazer: Is Alex Smith The Chiefs' Alex Gordon? Time For Mahomes NOW!
The Chiefs were going to build a great team around Alex Smith to help them get to the super bowl. We had footballs greatest current NFL coach, right, in Andy Reid, oh and quarterback genius...so we are told. Never happened. Instead our highest paid player has been a step above average throwing for just over 3000 yards a season most of the time and having only one year here where he passed for over 20 touchdowns, 2013, he hit 23. In many ways Alex Smith is the Chiefs Alex Gordon, the man who the Royals told us was our next George Brett. Alex is the highest paid Royal and is currently hitting .200 with 4 home runs, for the season. Gordon as we all know is a fantastic outfielder, though he just can't hit, and a great guy. So where are the Royals today? Is Gordon leading the way into the post season this year or next? NO.
The Chiefs stepped up and landed perhaps one of the most talented quarterbacks in modern college history with Patrick Mahomes. With a large group of young new starting quarterbacks in the league, many observers feel Mahomes may be the best of them all. He just needs to play and show that he is the man. My question is why not start him right now. Alex Smith has almost no future in Kansas City. He had his career, both here and in San Fran. At 33 and looking to be on the downside of a good not great decade plus as an NFL starter its time to move on and upward. Smith does not have the 'it' factor and never has with any of teams in any season, thus the one playoff win in KC during his entire career here. This team needs a new leader to motivate the good players to be great and the new ones to believe in themselves and this team. Nobody sees KC as a super bowl contender this season. We don't have but one proven wide receiver, Tyreek Hill and this is his second year. Travis Kelce is our only other weapon, you know the best tight end in football, but he had only 4 touchdowns last year and when needed against the Steelers was with Tony Gonzalez in stats land somewhere. Those are our only 'weapons.' Spencer Ware who had one decent season two years ago and was horrid last season is out for the year with an ACL, maybe out for good. The Chiefs will depend on a rookie, Kareem Hunt to lead the team as a running back. We have a couple maybes at wide out including Chris Conley who has done little in two seasons with Alex at quarterback but looked great with Mahomes in game one pre season. He's a maybe. Mahomes likes and works with another new guy, Gehrig Dieter another maybe good receiver with Patrick out there.
The Chiefs defense has no shut down leader save Marcus Peters. Eric Berry is very good but more of an occasional big play guy then an every down pressure player. Our linebackers are all hurt or old, Derek Johnson is 35 and has two leg injuries, Justin Houston is paid a fortune but injured every season and so far nearly worthless the last two years, Dee Ford, small not sure what he really is yet, Tamba Hali is a players coach and at the end of the line. These guys need a new STAR to get excited about and step up.
Patrick Mahomes looks to be a John Elway. What will he learn sitting behind Alex Smith, how not to fumble? Mahomes is the better passer, runner, big play quarterback right now. He has total confidence. Right now the Chiefs are a maybe wild card, if all goes well with Smith and the veterans stay healthy and step up. Mahomes could be the explosion that ignites this team right now. He is the future, why not now. Alex had his career, he leaves with having made over 100 million dollars and being a play off quarterback, lets fire up these players, the fans and the NFL with the new gunslinger Patrick Mahomes. Lets build the new team around our number one new guy.

You could leave comments on it, but it's not there anymore. It's gone. Bill cut it off. He has a blog but he doesn't have a comments section on it. I think I can remember when there was a time when there was comments section on Bill's blog. That was a long time ago. There isn't a comments section on his blog anymore because he cut it out. I was there in westport with Billy and Jeff to make sure you didn't get shot or jumped by five guys...you stood alone to fight in front of the Beaumont club. Of course the cowards no showed. ReplyDeleteO.K. tonight we get to take another look at Pat Mahomes starting the game for KC. Again he will be with the second,third and soon to be cut team...no number ones..so its a bit hard to judge. Yet his confidence, talent and NFL IQ are all there to see. Again I see no reason not to go with Pat game one in New England. That's me though, the Chiefs likely will start with Alex and see how he does for a few games. Of course

As you see no names, no identity so they can make up anything. Looks like the new items are all the times I got my ass smashed around KC. My last losing fight in KC was in high school on the plaza. I was maybe 17 years old. Matters not huh...ha. Hope the Chiefs can get it going so we have an interesting fall with the NFL here.
