SHOCK!!! KANSAS CITY 'SMART-PARKING' TECH THREATENS DRIVERS WITH EPIC PRICE SPIKE FOR RIVER MARKET ACCESS!!!

Once again, City Hall continues its vendetta against the River Market as it seeks crackdown on Kansas City drivers looking for convenient and affordable spaces.

Read the latest 12th & Oak presser closely as Kansas City rolls out new parking meters that are dramatically increasing fees.

Deets:

KCMO is upping the ante by injecting smart technologies into the downtown parking experience. The goal is to make parking downtown more user-friendly, so the City is installing single and multi-space parking meters.

For this 90-day demonstration, four different smart-parking technology vendors are installing meters in the River Market, Crossroads Arts District and Central Business District. Paid parking will be new for the River Market, with the demo meters on 5th Street, 3rd Street, Main Street and Grand Boulevard.

Enforcement of the new meters will be weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and time regulations at meter locations will not change. The parking rate is set at $1 an hour in an attempt to encourage parking space turnover.

A word of warning from our blog community:

"They'll be up to $3/hour in no time! If they are like the credit card parking meters in Chicago and other cities, they can really raise the prices . . . "

  4. There are several things Kansas City, Missouri excels in. They are, and not necessarily in this order: • Steaks • BBQ • Feeding the poor and homeless • Discouraging new and existing businesses • Issuing Parking Citations

  5. When the business owners lease is up its good bye. The river market will turn into a ghost town The city market will still have its vendors and reasturants. There are to many outher entertainment venues with less hassle. You know that is more than a RODEO DRIVE PARKING GARAGE. OR PARKING AT THE SANTA MONICA PIER.

  7. This just further discourages the majority of residents around the metro from driving by restaurants, bars, farmers' markets, and other businesses just to go through the extra hassle and expense of visiting the River Market. Why bother?
KC regularly acts as though making something more difficult and expensive somehow equals making it more attractive, and this is a good example.
The bloom is off the "everybody is moving to and going downtown" rose across the country, with the suburbs again growing much more quickly than urban areas, that fact offered by none other than the king of urban futurists, Richard Florida. The fad has become a fade.
Not good news for downtown KCMO, where when the excitement fades away, there's little left but long-term public debt.
    Frosty.

  8. Nah. None of the above. Just a bunch of lame comments from buffoons whose idea of going out is getting to Applebee's by 4:30PM for their happy hour deals, then home to bed by 8:00PM. Dull dullards doing dull things.

  10. I go to City Market all the time. It's not all that cool, compared to what you find in better cities, but for the mediocrity that is Kansas City, it's a fun spot.

I avoid City Market on weekends, and now Wednesdays, when it becomes a mob scene and the No. 1 attraction ... lots of free parking ... is not available.

If I have to start paying every time I go to City Market, I will stop going there. Period.

  11. There is one of these parking meter demo areas across the street from my business. The signs telling parkers about it are tiny and so obscure no one will see them. The electronic pay kiosk isn't anywhere close to the parking spaces so no one will use it. Just wait until innocent people start coming back to their cars after a nice lunch at a River Market restaurant and find a $100 parking ticket in their car. Think they'll ever come back to the area?

  12. If River Market meters, it is only fair that the Plaza gets them too.

  13. City Hall needs to be adding new parking garages to meet the demand in the area.

  14. River Market already has 2 hour time limit for parking on the streets in the area. So what is purposes of the meters besides greed???

  16. This is sLIE's idea of how a big city operates, you know, like Indianapolis which is the city they use to copy whatever they do. Lmao!

  17. They think by having meters with a two hour limit it will encourage the limited rare parking spots to turn over more frequently for use by customers of River market businesses. It is supposed to prevent the people who use the River Market as all day free park-n-ride lot for their free streetcar rides to work. it will drive business away as who will pay to park so they can eat in scrappy River Market restaurant? There is nowhere decent to eat there, worth paying for parking to visit.
