Cost cutting leads to earnings gain in flat year for H&R Block - Kansas City Business Journal

Despite a year of flat revenue, H&R Block Inc. posted a 10 percent gain in earnings for the fiscal year ended April 30, thanks in large part to cost-cutting efforts. Total operating expenses declined 3.5 percent to $85 million compared with the prior fiscal year.

  3. H&R Block used to be affordable when they did my taxes by hand, with a pencil and paper. After they went digital with computers and programs that did all the calculations for the person preparing the return, my cost for my VERY simple return shot up to $200. After nearly 40 years with them, I finally had to stop. With all the easy software out today, it's a no-brainer to drop the Block.
