Calculating Kansas City Streetcar Travel Times

In fairness and just for a bit of objectivity, thanks to our blog community for this link that offers a quick look at toy train travel times according to the Internets.

Here's the word:

Streetcar route travel times as calculated by Google Maps from City Market to Union Station

Awesome TKC Denizen: "It is faster to take the trolley than to walk."

Driving = 10 minutes

Bicycle = 12 minutes

Bus = 15 minutes

Streetcar = 20 minutes

Walking = 37 minutes

You decide . . .

  1. Don't forget to add in the break down times and waiting into the equation.

  2. Still a scam, still a ripoff and obviously not as efficient as a bike. This list might be informative but it's really just a sign that KC has backed OLD TECHNOLOGY and now is stuck with it.

  3. Good info.

    Confirms what we have always said.

    Driving is still faster and more efficient.

  4. Very nice, looking forward to the calculations when it extends to UMKC and to the riverfront. Keep trying basement boy,(keep posting the titty pics as well).

  5. What a waste. The bus is faster.

  6. ^^^^So true. It's already running, and it doesn't even require a fixed rail.

  7. The bus is faster, doesn't require a fixed rail or overhead electrical wires, doesn't require cars and delivery trucks to park within narrow white lines, won't come to a stop if a car is over the white lines or there is an accident in an intersection and most importantly, won't require Half a billion to build an extension to UMKC. But white people in Kansas City don't want to ride a bus so they require the City to build them a streetcar. The Streetcar = The Great White Hope for Kansas City.

  10. No wonder KCMO got rid of the streetcars 70 years ago; old technology!

  11. At this rate if it's extended to UMKC it will take an hour each way.

  12. Once "tax & spend" is gone from City Hall, the starter line will be shut down. This City can not afford the tourist attraction.

  13. On the positive side, the trolley is faster than walking.

  14. So are UMKC students too elitist to ride a bus? Their student ID already allows them to ride the bus for free, doesn't it? But we have to spend half a billion dollars to build the students a trolley. I hope none of the graduates get a job in New York City where they have to ride smelly subways.

  15. Who could have possibly guessed that a mode of transportation that is fixed within traffic lanes, that can't bypass impediments within those fixed lanes, and that is basically bound to the same "rules" as everything else that uses those lanes (cars, buses, bikes) but doesn't have the same flexibility to accommodate issues with them, would be slower than the rest?

    Anyone other than the streetcar cheerleaders, that's who. But to be fair, their lack of foresight was probably not based upon a lack of ability, it was based upon the fact that they were / are paid to ignore the obvious.
