NO . . . Burns & Mac is NOT going to buy Kansas City an airport. In the end, despite hype from unquestioning local media outlets, Kansas City taxpayers and the people who use the airport are always the ones who pick up the vast majority of the bill. One Insider said: "How stupid does he think voters are???"
That is yet to be determined.

Burns & McDonnell is asking the city to waive bidding requirements that typically accompany publicly-funded projects.
OVER MAYOR SLY'S TENURE BURNS & MAC EXECS & THE COMPANY HAVE BEEN ONE OF HIS BIGGEST CAMPAIGN SUPPORTERS . . . TO HAND THEM THE BIGGEST NO BID CONTRACT IN LOCAL HISTORY SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!!!
At the very least, this is one of the most corrupt ideas Mayor Sly has ever championed.

ReplyDeleteCheck out the renovations to the American Airlines gates in Terminal C. On departure you now walk from ticketing past the door used to exit the secured area to TSA screening- seemed like at least 50 yards further. On arrival you are directed back to that exit and then walk past TSA screening and Spirit and Frontier check in to retrieve bags. Probably walk 300 yards further than was required prior to renovations. Not so big a deal for the young and able, but Grandma, Grandpa, folks with disabilities and families with young children ... the walk out is now about as long as the exit from O'Hare. My point, they are making it less convenient. Next step, reducing the frequency of the shuttles to the parking lots. Give it up folks, our leaders know better than we and are determined to have their way.

They practiced the "no competitive bid" concept last winter. Worked fine. Guess everyone who doesn't appreciate the value of hiring girlfriends to serve your client is really just a hater.

Delete9:29, the proposal would shift the cost burden from area taxpayers, most of whom are non-users, to people who do fly, i.e. users. I see nothing unfair about requiring users to pay for what they use, and exempting taxpayers from paying for what they don't use.

Neither proposal burdens area taxpayers who are non-users.
ReplyDeleteAnd somehow grandmas, grandpas and people with disabilities are able to use every other airport in America. The difference is they can find a place to sit down, take a shit or get a cup of coffee after they go through the security lines that aren't any longer in airports of our size.

The truth is the sewer and water depts are so much worse than you can know--Bums and Macks is the only eng firm that will work on a piece of it and theyKEEP THIER MOUTH SHUT about the horrible condition of everything around them that they aren't working on-- the true problem and scope never get fixed. Treatment plants are a disgrace of neglect and often poor engineering and parts. Get paid well to do a little something and never have a good success or a repair that will function as planned. Same thing applied to the airport- been neglected for alot of years. Lies. Salaries!

ReplyDeleteThe key FLAW in this announcement is that James proposes to give Burns and McDonnell EXCLUSIVE NO-BID dibs on the terminal construction! It's THE DEFINITION of STUPIDITY by a public official, and smacks of FULL-BLOWN CRONYISM.
Also, notice from a tactical marketing standpoint James is attempting to turn this debate into "Who will build the terminal?" instead of the original question "Do we need a new terminal? And why?"
The public is supposed to forget the fact that Burns and McDonnell OWN Sylvester James! Close to 90-percent of Burns and McDonnell employees DO NOT reside within KCMO city limits. KCMO, under Mayor James leadership, built this wealthy private corporation a new headquarters, exempted them from paying their fair share of taxes, and falls to his knees when executives bark "assume the position!"

12:40, I have not flown out of terminal c for a while, but I am familiar with b. The walks to and from gate to toilet are no farther than in, say, LGA, the ability to buy coffee and a sandwich is about the same, and it is easier to find a seat at your gate in MCI. Pick up and drop off is a whole lot easier here than there. Went through Indy's airport recently; much nicer looking than ours, but the walks and conveniences are comparable.
